IOWA CITY, Iowa - Week 1 of the 2025 season saw me at Liberty High, whuch topped Cedar Falls, 15-14, in the opener. I wrote about several of the Lightning players after that game, but figured I'd see the squad again, which would be good, considering there were other guys to report on.

That opportunity happened Friday night back here for Liberty's first-round Class 5A playoff game against Waukee. The Lightning prevailed, 34-20.

Liberty lost a lot of production from its offensive backfield to graduation after last season. Beaver has made those exits less impactful with his performance in 2025. That included the junior rushing 16 times for 105 yards in a first-round playoff win against Waukee. That lifted his season total to 472 yards (7.6 YPC) and five scores. Beaver is a downhill runner, first and foremost, getting it and hitting the hole. He can make people miss and stick his foot in the ground to change direction, however. His vision his keen as well. While not the biggest back, he his tough to take down with arm tackles and escapes the grasp of defenders often, even when it looks like he's bottled up. He usually has some extra lean to finish runs.

Liberty's offensive line really has been a strength in 2025, as it showed during a first-round playoff win against visiting Waukee on Halloween night. Sertterh stood out as a key player in the group, which paved the way for 257 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground from his right guard position. Sertterh is not physically imposing to look at, although he's not small, but much of his success is derived from playing with good technique, including getting his pads down. He utilizes his hands well, and is strong. Sertterh comes through in big moments and always plays through the whistle.

Mohr was instrumental in the Lightning's first-round playoff win against Waukee on Halloween night. The junior helped Liberty chew up 257 yards and reach the end zone four times on the ground. Mohr is a longer, athletic looking lineman with a frame capable of adding plenty of good weight and strength. It leaves projection for him to reach his sizable potential. That's saying something when you consider Mohr already produces on a regular basis. He stands out for his quickness off of the snap and his long arms, which helps him control the opponent. Morh operates with sound technique, and is a prospect deserving of more attention along the recruiting trail.

Rozz popped out to me during the 2025 season opener against Cedar Falls. He reminded me of past Lightning skill position players that performed much bigger than their physical measurements. Rozz was at it again. He rushed for a touchdown and hauled in an important 24-yard reception on a team focused on running the ball. Rozz is a tough kid that embraces the game's physicality, which helps him succeed against larger opponents. His quickness in space and speed in the open field also aid him in delivering positive results.

Hennings caught my eye during the 2025 season opener against Cedar Falls. The junior brings athleticism and speed to the defense, where he can be used off of the edge or setting up at linebacker. That versatility is a mark in the plus column for Hennings, whose frame also is capable of bulking up and adding strength without the loss of his quickness. His long arms are an asset when getting them up in the throwing lanes or when chasing down ball carriers. Hennings looks like a prospect that has a chance to continue ascending with more reps and is well worth college coaches monitoring.

Lester is getting run as a sophomore skill position player in a program that's very good at developing them. He stood out to me when watching Liberty in the 2025 season-opener against Cedar Falls and again in seeing the Lighting face Waukee in the first round of the postseason. Lester brings a little more size to the table compared to some current and former standouts at the school. It's also a frame capable of filling out more and adding strength without the loss of speed and athleticism. His recruiting stock should be increased by his versatility, which has allowed him to contribute running the ball, catching it, defending the pass and in supporting the run. Lester also has flashed potential in the return game. It feels like he's just scratching the surface of what he can be, which should be exciting for prospective college programs.
