A pair of District 10-5A rivals met for the second time in seven days Thursday, this time with playoff history on the line in an opening-round Division-I Select matchup.

Riverdale struck immediately, but Bonnabel brushed off the Rebels' explosive play and managed to find more consistent offensive success in a largely defensive slug fest.

The Bruins were lights-out defensively the rest of the way, scored a touchdown each in the first and second quarters to lead before the break and then a pair late to put away a 28-14 win, the program's first playoff victory since 1997.

Here's a look at some of the eye-catching standouts from the contest.

Deron Hervey — 6-0, 200 EDGE — Bonnabel (2026)

and Quincy Jackson — 6-0, 225 EDGE — Bonnabel (2026)

and Marvin Causey — 5-11, 225 DL — Bonnabel (2026)

and Learick Stewart — 6-2, 230 DL — Bonnabel (2027)

The Bruins' defensive front stood out as much as any group on the field, both bottling up one of the city's better running backs and getting into the backfield for disruptive plays. Hervey and Jackson repeatedly blew by blockers off the edge for sacks and tackles for loss, and Causey and Stewart were stout up the middle — with Causey also chipping in a fourth-down sack among the highest-impact plays.

Karl Perkins — 6-0, 170 QB — Bonnabel (2026)

and Raheem Williams — WR/DB — Bonnabel (2028)

The senior field general and speedy sophomore athlete linked up for the Bruins' first three touchdowns on a range of plays: a quick, short pass on which Williams broke a tackle and dashed off to the end zone; a play-action shot deep down the left sideline; and finally a well-placed throw leading a slant into the end zone and strong-handed catch through contact.

Tyree Bruer — 5-10, 170 RB — Bonnabel (2026)

Riverdale's defense was stingy in its own right, but the Bruins' senior running back managed to slice his way up field for occasional big gains that started to pick up consistency late in the game, keeping the chains moving into the red zone to set up the third Perkins-Williams touchdown and then busting a third-and-short on the next possession into a breakaway score to put away the win.

[player_tooltip player_id='1737465' first='Cole' last='Moses'] — 6-0, 210 LB — Riverdale (2026)

The senior linebacker was all over the field from navigating traffic and making hard-hitting plays near the line of scrimmage to getting down the field, getting his hands on a pass or two and chasing down a receiver late in the first half to punch out a fumble from behind to save a potential Bonnabel score.

Joey Phillips — DL — Riverdale (2028)

The sophomore was a big spark for the Rebels' defensive front with multiple big plays behind the line of scrimmage, including a tackle for loss and third-down sack in a matter of a few plays to quickly disrupt an entire Bonnabel possession.

[player_tooltip player_id='751777' first='Sy'our' last='Ferrell'] — 6-2, 175 DB/WR — Riverdale (2026)

and Sabyron Ferrell — 6-3, 175 DB — Riverdale (2027)

The Ferrell brothers both made notable plays during the course of the contest. Among the highlights for Sy'our, the senior safety, was a hard-hitting third-down stop in Riverdale territory to help shut down a Bonnabel drive shy of points. Sabyron, the junior corner, was tested throughout the night and come away with an interception late in the first half and another end-zone pass-breakup among his biggest plays.

Lance Simmons — 5-10, 185 QB — Riverdale (2026)

The senior quarterback showcased his quickness and speed right away dashing out to the right, cutting past a defender and winning a long foot-race to the 80-yard touchdown. Simmons also put a few passes on target in tighter coverage despite limited time and separation much of the night agains the Bruins.

Byron Perrilliat — 5-10, 180 RB — Riverdale (2026)

Bonnabel's stellar defense made for a difficult night for the Rebels' standout running back with only a couple plays where he was able to find much space or pick up more than a short gain. But Perrilliat still managed to make his presence felt in a big way with a late kick-return touchdowns that provided a brief spark to their comeback hopes before the Bruins could score again to put the game away.

[player_tooltip player_id='1237783' first='Toren' last='Signal'] — 6-0, 170 QB — Riverdale (2026)

The versatile senior athlete was involved in all three phases, particularly as a go-to receiver for Simmons on offense capable of making tough catches through contact and a physical defensive back on the other side of the ball who slipped past a blocker and corralled a third-down tackle for loss to keep his Rebels within reach early in the fourth quarter.
