The 6A Lake Oswego Lakers and 5A Silverton Foxes couldn't be much different in terms of their make-up.

Truly, they don't have much in common.

But both can call themselves, “champions.”

While Lake Oswego was run first - and maybe second and third - Silverton was as balanced as a team could be, averaging more than 200 yards a game rushing and passing with 33 passing touchdowns and 32 rushing touchdowns heading into the title game.

Defensively, Lake Oswego relied on a veteran group in the front seven, particularly al linebacker with a host of all-league performers, while Silverton replaced its entire front seven this season.

Still, the two schools shared one other major thing in common.

Development.

Coming into the season, Lake Oswego was a state title favorite, but some questions along the offensive line.

By season's end, it was the best starting five some coaches had seen in the state in a decade.

Seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1525160' first='Jackson' last='Graetz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1232749' first='Adam' last='Williams'] led the charge, but seniors Solomon Kroeker and Tripton Ciuprk and junior [player_tooltip player_id='1359160' first='Dylan' last='Marquez'] were also special.

As that group developed, so too did the wrinkle of allowing Washington State Cougars commit and senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='402409' first='Hudson' last='Kurland'] to run the football.

After a 148-yard performance on the ground in the semifinals, Kurland rushed for 79 yards and a score in the state title game, a factor that Central Catholic couldn't account for given the need to cover the Lakers' weapons.

In the final six weeks of the season, Lake Oswego beat opponents by a combined score of 199-23.

There may not have been a true juggernaut in Oregon football at the beginning of the season, but by year's end Lake Oswego's dominance was undeniable.

Silverton entered the season replacing its quarterback, four of its five starting offensive linemen and its entire front seven.

“How am I ever going to get back (to the semifinals)?” Silverton coach Dan Lever said he asked himself after losing 20-plus seniors from last year's team.

Turns out, it wouldn't take long.

Silverton beat talented Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) in the first game of the season, and Lever said his coaching staff immediately knew they had a pretty good team.

Against Summit in the state championship game, Silverton controlled the game up front and minimized penalties while Summit's first-half drives were stalled out three different times with key penalties.

Silverton looked like the more veteran team , and if the Foxes find an answer at quarterback this offseason they'll be playing late into the postseason again next year.

Both Lake Oswego and Silverton had talented skill position guys, but it was the talent in the trenches that really allowed their teams to reach the top of the mountain.

It was an unconventional year in Oregon in that the co-offensive player of the year award was shared by two players who didn't make it to the quarterfinals of the 6A playoffs, while the defensive player of the year was bounced in the quarters.
