Week 8 of the 2025 New Mexico High School football season is complete. Here is our eighth edition of the Weekly Whiparound, our comprehensive deep dive into everything that happened on the field. Enjoy!

Teams of the Week: La Cueva (6A), Belen (5A), Silver (4A), Wingate (3A), Hozho Academy (2A).

Barring an upset over the final three weeks, La Cueva essentially secured the District 6A-2 title with a 54-35 shootout win over Los Lunas on the Tigers' home field. La Cueva quickly grabbed a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and built the advantage to 35-14 at halftime. The Bears added a field goal and rushing TD by the midway point of the third quarter as the lead grew to 44-14. Los Lunas pulled to within two scores at 44-29 early in the fourth quarter but the Tigers got no closer. La Cueva DB [player_tooltip player_id='1594142' first='Jhett' last='Kinghorn'] recovered a blocked punt for a TD and had a 42-yard Pick-6, one of two interceptions on the night for him. La Cueva's first TD (on the Bears first offensive snap) was a 62-yard catch-and-run from QB [player_tooltip player_id='1183085' first='Monty' last='Melendez'] to speedy sophomore WR [player_tooltip player_id='1686972' first='Chris' last='Lopez']. Later, Melendez threw a 6-yard TD pass to Lopez to make it 21-7.

Belen (3-4, 2-2) trounced Miyamura, 52-12, in the only game involving Class 5A schools in Week 8. Eagles dynamic dual threat QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604925' first='Gonzalo' last='Cano'] (‘Chalito') threw for 160 yards and 2 TD while rushing for 103 yards and 2 TD on 9 carries. Belen built a 24-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised home from there. Each team scored a TD in the 2nd quarter as Belen led, 31-6, at halftime. The Eagles are tied for third in District 5A-1 with Valley and Miyamura. They host Highland in Week 9 with an opportunity to move up the standings.

Silver (5-3, 1-3) registered its first district win by surprising Chaparral, 21-13, in Silver City. The Colts defense limited the Chaparral offense to 242 total yards and did just enough offensively to pull out the much-needed win. Junior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1606164' first='Urijah' last='Arrey'] rushed for 125 yards and 1 TD on 14 carries. Chaparral RB [player_tooltip player_id='1155082' first='Raul' last='Lopez'] (9 carries, 157 yards) scored on a 14-yard TD run early in the 2nd quarter to give Chaparral a 13-7 lead but those would be the final points scored by the Lobos. Arrey's 6-yard scoring run + 2-point conversion by [player_tooltip player_id='1709925' first='Josiah' last='Madrid'] gave Silver the lead for good.

Wingate (6-2, 4-0) held off Gallup for a 14-12 road win that kept the Bears unbeaten in District 3A-1 play. After Riley Morgan returned the 2nd half kickoff for a TD to give Wingate a 14-6 lead, Gallup pulled to within 2 points on Alex Gonzalez's 18-yard rushing TD midway through the fourth quarter. However, the two-point conversion failed. Soon thereafter, Gallup recovered a Wingate fumble at midfield but turned the ball over on downs. Bengals DB Jayson Bruner intercepted a Wingate pass with about 3 minutes left but the Bears defense rose up and stopped Gallup to preserve the win. Wingate faces Thoreau (6-1, 3-0) in Week 10 with the winner likely claiming the district title.

Hozho Academy (5-2, 2-0) is tied with Navajo Prep for first place in District 2A-1 after trouncing Newcomb, 55-0.

4A District Football
Silver 🏈 21
Chaparral 🏈 13
Final@_NMAA @NmoaOfficials @nmpreps @JamesDYodice pic.twitter.com/Mx3dTzEyGw
— Artie Sanchez (@SHS24AD) October 11, 2025

Players of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1605057' first='Junior' last='Medrano'], Hobbs(6A); [player_tooltip player_id='1604925' first='Gonzalo' last='Cano'], Belen (5A); Kaleb Huchens, Bloomfield (4A); Felipe Carranza, Hatch Valley (3A); Zadyn Lujan, Jal (2A).

[player_tooltip player_id='1605057' first='Junior' last='Medrano'] of Hobbs (5-2, 2-1) has emerged as one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the entire state. He completed 13-of-21 passes for 154 yards and 4 TD while rushing for 151 yards and 1 TD on 16 carries to lead Hobbs to a 44-33 victory over Centennial at Watson Stadium. The win propelled the Eagles into a third-place tie with Centennial in District 6A-3, one-half game behind Carlsbad (5-3, 3-1) and one game behind unbeaten Las Cruces (7-0, 3-0). RB [player_tooltip player_id='1604984' first='Shamus' last='Wright'] added 102 rushing yards on 6 carries for Hobbs, which amassed an impressive 317 yards on the ground and averaged 9.1 yards per carry against a very good Centennial defense.

Bloomfield senior Kaleb Huchens performed brilliantly on both sides of the ball in the Bobcats' convincing win over Moriarty. He caught 6 passes for 98 yards and 2 TD and led the Bloomfield defense with 17 tackles, 3.0 TFL and 1.0 sack.

Best Team Offensive Performance: Albuquerque High.

Best Team Defensive Performance: Raton. The Tigers held Tucumcari to NINE yards rushing on 13 carries and 105 yards of total offense in Raton's 21-18 road victory.

Best Games: Eldorado 53, Sandia 50; Taos 30, Grants 28.

Eldorado (3-4, 2-2) continued to build its Class 6A playoff credentials by jumping out to a 41-24 halftime lead and holding off fast-charging Sandia (2-5, 2-2) in the final frame. Trailing 47-24 late in the third quarter, Sandia scored consecutive TDs to close to within 47-38 with about 9 minutes remaining in the fourth. But Eldorado's dynamic playmaker [player_tooltip player_id='1155116' first='Jahari' last='Morehead'] scampered 33 yards for a TD with about 3 minutes left. Sandia QB [player_tooltip player_id='1594010' first='Jahleel' last='Lewis'] responded with a 29-yard TD run and a 47-yard TD pass to [player_tooltip player_id='1613284' first='George' last='Smith'] to cut the deficit to 53-50. Sandia forced an Eldorado punt and drove as far as the Eagles's 29-yard line but couldn't score.

Best Rivalry Win: West Las Vegas 35, Robertson 6. West Las Vegas beat Robertson for the first time in nearly two decades to set up a Week 9 showdown in District 3A-2 against unbeaten St. Michael's (27-game winning streak) on the Dons' home field. The WLV defense held Robertson to just 46 yards in total offense. The Dons scored touchdowns in each of the first two quarters for a 14-0 halftime lead. One of those scores came on a 13-yard run by Edward Lopez. The advantage grew to 28-0 with two more scores in the third quarter, one on a 78-yard run by [player_tooltip player_id='1827334' first='Jeremiah' last='Ortega']. Robertson scored its only points of the game on [player_tooltip player_id='1672753' first='Andres' last='Sanchez']'s 1-yard rushing TD midway through the fourth quarter. West Las Vegas has waited so long to beat Robertson – and experienced so much heartbreak in the rivalry throughout the years - that the fact the Cardinals dressed just 21 players due to a mass suspension of 13 players over a week ago due to a violation of school policy didn't matter. No empathy here.

Sophomore of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1613284' first='George' last='Smith'], Sandia. Smith rushed for 77 yards on 6 carries, caught 9 passes for 154 yards and scored 4 TD in Sandia's shootout loss to Eldorado.

Freshman of the Week: Jayden Walker, Jal. Walker had 4 tackles, 1.0 TFL and 1.0 sack in Jal's win over Tularosa.

Class 6A Roundup: QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604705' first='Micah' last='Takahashi'] completed 18-of-23 passes for 289 yards and 2 TD to lead Rio Rancho (4-3, 2-0) to a 34-13 victory over Piedra Vista Thursday night in Farmington. Takahashi also rushed for 72 yards and 2 TD on 12 carries to lead the Rams ground game. He totaled 361 yards in offense. Dynamic WR [player_tooltip player_id='1266408' first='Parker' last='Miller'] caught 9 passes for 173 yards, his fourth 100+ yard receiving game this season. His 35-yard TD reception from Takahashi gave the Rams a 20-7 lead late in the first quarter. Rio Rancho scored 34 unanswered points in the first half after Piedra Vista opened the scoring with a five-play, 63-yard drive. Rio Rancho is tied atop the District 6A-1 standings with Cleveland and Volcano Vista, all at 2-0. The Rams face Volcano Vista on Friday. . .Volcano Vista (6-1, 2-0) pulled away from Farmington in the second half for its fifth straight victory, a 29-7 road decision over the Scorpions at Hutchinson Stadium. Hawks RB [player_tooltip player_id='1423739' first='D'Angelo' last='Mitchell']'s 40-yard run led to the lone TD of the first half by [player_tooltip player_id='1245683' first='Ismael' last='Mendez'] III. Mitchell ran 34 yards for a TD early in the 3rd quarter to make it 14-0. After the Volcano Vista defense forced a turnover, Mitchell scored again on a two-yard run to increase the lead to 22-0. Volcano Vista's next two games are against Rio Rancho and Cleveland as the Hawks battle for a first-round bye in the 6A playoffs. . .Cleveland (6-1, 2-0) kept pace with Rio Rancho and Volcano Vista in the district standings with a solid 27-6 victory over Cibola at Lightning Bolt Stadium. The Cleveland defense held the Cougars to 175 total offensive yards. Cleveland led by just 14-6 at halftime but dominated the second half. RB [player_tooltip player_id='1600936' first='Samuel' last='Bustillos'] rushed for a TD and UNM commit WR [player_tooltip player_id='851903' first='Jacob' last='Maldonado'] caught a TD pass before the Storm secured the win in the fourth quarter when QB [player_tooltip player_id='851873' first='Jordan' last='Kekoa Hatch'] connected with WR Xavier Montoya-Chavez on a 25+ yard TD with 5:25 left. Hatch finished 17-of-23 passing for 293 yards and 3 INT. . .Carlsbad QB Marley Munoz completed 15-of-26 passes for 272 yards and 2 TD and elite WR [player_tooltip player_id='1137066' first='Robert' last='Castaneda'] had 9 receptions for 205 yards and 2 TD + 2 punt returns for 62 yards to lead the Cavemen to a 30-25 road victory over Alamogordo. Carlsbad overcame a 19-7 deficit early in the second quarter when Alamogordo's [player_tooltip player_id='1600835' first='Nathanael' last='Best'] scored on a 75-yard Pick-6. The Cavemen scored the next 9 points on RB [player_tooltip player_id='1605005' first='Brock' last='Wright']'s 3-yard rushing TD + [player_tooltip player_id='1155255' first='Lennon' last='Ananins']' 42-yard FG and trailed 19-16 at halftime. Carlsbad (5-3, 3-1), which has won three games in a row, has sole possession of 2nd place in District 6A-3, one-half game behind Las Cruces (7-0, 3-0). Those two teams clash in Week 10 with the district crown possibly on the line. . .Albuquerque High's quest for the school's first playoff berth in three decades continued with a 34-27 victory over West Mesa. Elite RB [player_tooltip player_id='1266534' first='Alberto' last='Landeros'] rushed for 286 yards and 3 TD on 20 carries to lead a powerful Bulldogs ground game that totaled 351 yards on 30 carries, an average of 11.7 yards per carry. Albuquerque High (4-3, 2-2) is part of a four-way tie for third place in District 6A-1. . .Clovis (2-5) rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit to beat Organ Mountain, 30-23, at Field of Dreams and snap a five-game losing streak. The Wildcats' comeback began when [player_tooltip player_id='1154930' first='Javier' last='Jimenez'] raced 55 yards for a TD plus the 2-point conversion early in the third quarter. Clovis took its first lead at 22-20 late in the third quarter on Kyden Everett's 3-yard rushing TD and 2-point conversion. . .Santa Fe (4-2, 2-2) kept its 6A playoff hopes alive by holding off Atrisco Heritage, 27-22, Saturday at Community Stadium. The Demons built a 27-8 halftime lead before the Jaguars rallied in the second half. But they fell short when a fourth down ball into the end zone was batted down by the Santa Fe defender. Santa Fe had the ground game going early, accumulating 170+ yards on the ground in the first half alone. RB Jasper Nelson finished with over 225 yards rushing, 165+ in the first half. Atrisco rallied in the second half on a short TD run by [player_tooltip player_id='1632365' first='Josiah' last='Lopez'] and a 35-yard TD reception to [player_tooltip player_id='1272752' first='J'ven' last='Smith'].

Photo: MaxPreps

Class 5A Roundup: In the only game involving Class 5A teams in Week 8, Belen battered Miyamura, 52-12.
