Week 5 of the 2025 New Mexico High School football season is complete. Here is our fifth edition of the Weekly Whiparound, our comprehensive deep dive into everything that happened on the field. Enjoy!

Teams of the Week: Sandia (6A), Lovington (5A), Chaparral (4A), Hot Springs (3A), Santa Rosa (2A).

Sandia won its first game under new head coach Tylon Wilder with a 38-19 victory over Santa Fe at Ivan Head Stadium. The key play in the game was a momentum-shifting 87-yard Pick-6 interception by [player_tooltip player_id='1155132' first='Aiden' last='Maldonado'] late in the third quarter just as the Demons were driving towards a potential go-ahead score. The Matadors then secured the win with [player_tooltip player_id='1613284' first='George' last='Smith']'s 13-yard TD run with 4:42 left in the 4th quarter. Earlier, Sandia QB [player_tooltip player_id='1594010' first='Jahleel' last='Lewis'] capped an impressive 90+ yard drive by throwing a 22-yard TD pass to Junior Hogues midway through the 3rd quarter.

Lovington (2-3) picked up its second win of the year in the District 5A-2 home opener against Goddard. [player_tooltip player_id='1137867' first='Elijah' last='Rivero'] caught a TD pass in the first half and returned a punt for a TD in the second half to lift Lovington to the 44-26 victory at Wildcats Stadium. [player_tooltip player_id='1137465' first='Kyler' last='Reaves'] had a Pick-6 interception in the 3rd quarter. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1137475' first='Jayden' last='Gutierrez'] ran for 2 TD in the 1st half. Lovington faces a big test in Week 6 as they travel to Artesia for a key District 5A-2 matchup at the Bulldog Bowl.

Chaparral (4-1) has been one of the heartwarming stories in New Mexico high school over the past two years. Since snapping a 40+ game losing streak in Week 3 last season, Chaparral is 8-7 and looks like a team capable of winning a district championship. Saturday, the Lobos made the long trip to Albuquerque Academy and beat the Chargers, 35-20, in impressive fashion. QB [player_tooltip player_id='851884' first='Israel' last='Nieto'] threw a pair of long TD passes (55 and 40 yards) to [player_tooltip player_id='854303' first='Aaron' last='Eliserio'] in the second half as Chaparral pulled away for the win.

Hot Springs (3-2) played another tight game and this time the Tigers were on the right side of close by completing a remarkable 4th quarter comeback in a 21-16 road win at NMMI. Hot Springs trailed 16-0 before scoring THREE touchdowns in the final 9 minutes to stun the Colts. The game-winning TD came with less than a minute left when QB [player_tooltip player_id='1613430' first='Zaiden' last='Baker'] found WR Evan Aguirre for a 29-yard TD.

Unbeaten Santa Rosa (5-0) completed the season sweep of the two Las Vegas schools with a 14-7 home victory over the West Las Vegas Dons. The Lions have allowed just 13 points in their last 3 games and 42 points in 5 games.

Players of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='854199' first='Hayes' last='Baum'], Cibola (6A), [player_tooltip player_id='1604925' first='Gonzalo' last='Cano'], Belen (5A), [player_tooltip player_id='854297' first='Tristin' last='Fernandez'], Grants (4A), [player_tooltip player_id='1613409' first='Mason' last='Fikany'], Ruidoso (3A), [player_tooltip player_id='1613435' first='Gracin' last='Vigil'], Navajo Prep (2A).

Cibola (4-1) continued its turnaround season under first-year head coach David Howes as UNM commit [player_tooltip player_id='854199' first='Hayes' last='Baum'] continued to excel on both sides of the ball as he rushed for 175 yards on 12 carries, completed 5-of-8 passes for 40 yards and made 6 tackles on defense.

Belen QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604925' first='Gonzalo' last='Cano'], nicknamed ‘Chalito,' rushed for 213 yards on just 8 carries, threw for 171 yards on 5 completions and accounted for 6 TD as the Eagles outscored Del Norte, 56-38, at Milne Stadium. Cano was also helped by an opportunistic Belen defense that returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Sophomores Noah Gonzalez and Jeremiah Lord had the Pick-6 scores.

[player_tooltip player_id='1613435' first='Gracin' last='Vigil'] of Navajo Prep scored three different ways in the first half as he returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown, a 35-yard interception return for a TD and a 70-yard kickoff return for a TD to spark Navajo Prep's 50-24 victory over independent Santa Fe Indian School in Farmington. Vigil totaled over 250 yards on the night. Navajo Prep built a 36-8 halftime lead and cruised to the win in the second half.

Best Team Offensive Performance: Alamogordo. The Tigers did what they do best in Friday night's 34-14 Homecoming victory over Organ Mountain in the District 6A-3 opener. Alamogordo rushed for 477 yards on 47 carries. Dual threat QB [player_tooltip player_id='1600835' first='Nathanael' last='Best'] had 346 yards and 2 TD on just 23 carries, an average of 15.0 yards per attempt. He also threw 2 TD passes. Alamogordo led, 20-7, after the 3rd quarter before pulling away in the 4th quarter with a pair of scores by [player_tooltip player_id='1606124' first='Nathanael' last='Cereceres'] (1-yard run) and Best's 1-yard TD run. Alamogordo (4-1) heads to Hobbs in Week 6 and Centennial in Week 7 for a pair of huge road games.

Best Team Defensive Performance: St. Michael's. The Horsemen extended their winning streak to 25 games with as impressive a defensive performance as any in the state this season against Class 2A power Eunice, who scored 88 points against a Texas school in Week 4. Dominating the line of scrimmage, St. Michael's held Eunice to minus-7 yards of total offense in the first half and things didn't get much better in the second half as QB [player_tooltip player_id='854273' first='Elijah' last='Melancon'] and the Cardinals offense struggled all afternoon to get anything going. Eunice wide receivers also dropped several passes. They averted the shutout with a TD late in the 4th quarter. The 47-8 victory by St, Michael's allowed the Horsemen to tie for the sixth longest winning streak in state history.

The score came after the La Cueva defense stopped Farmington on fourth down from the 2-yard line.
Crazy Conclusion In Carlsbad: One of the craziest and most bizarre endings to a game you'll ever see happened Friday night in Carlsbad, as described by Centennial head coach Aaron Ocampo to Prep Redzone New Mexico. Centennial led, 21-7, late in the fourth quarter and the game appeared over when the Hawks sacked Marley Munoz. However, the Hawks were flagged 15 yards for excessive celebration, allowing Carlsbad to keep the ball. Helped by a DPI penalty on Centennial, Carlsbad quickly moved down the field and scored a TD with 1 second left + PAT to make it 21-14. Centennial coaches and players were penalized for major penalties and Carlsbad kicked off from the Centennial 45-yard line. As expected, the Cavemen attempted an onsides kick. The squib kick appeared to ricochet off the leg of one of Centennial's players. A Carlsbad player scooped up the ball and raced into the end zone. Stunningly, the officials awarded the TD to the Cavemen even though the rules say you're not allowed to advance a muffed kickoff. Moreover, the clock should have started as soon as the ball touched a Centennial player, ending the game. Carlsbad attempted a 2-pointer for the win but was denied about a foot short of the end zone. The Cavemen came THIS close to scoring 15 points in the final one second of the game and pulling out what would have surely been a highly controversial win.
