The Spartans improved to 4-1 overall, signaling they are a legitimate contender for the District 4A-1 title.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Circle these dates: Oct. 17 when Bernalillo hosts Bloomfield (5-1) and Oct. 24 when the Spartans travel to Grants (5-1). Both games will significantly impact which team wins the district title and secures the automatic bid to the Class 4A playoffs.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Friday, Espanola Valley drove into Bernalillo territory on its first possession but fumbled, the first of four turnovers forced by the Spartans' Goon Squad defense. Bernalillo drove inside the 5-yard line when the Sundevils defense stiffened and forced a short field goal attempt. Espanola Valley got penetration up the middle and blocked the kick, keeping the game scoreless.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Bernalillo bounced back to dominate the second quarter. The Spartans snapped the scoreless tie with a rushing touchdown by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='853756' first='Mario' last='Molinar']</strong> just 36 seconds into the quarter. On the ensuing possession, Espanola Valley attempted a fake punt pass on fourth down but the throw was short and fell incomplete.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Bernalillo took advantage of the favorable field position (drive started on EV 22) by quickly scoring its second TD on a short run by dynamic QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='853757' first='Ulisses' last='Castro']</strong>.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Spartans defense produced another turnover when they intercepted a pass midway through the second quarter and returned it to the EV 17. Soon, Castro took the shotgun snap and ran over the left side. He found some open space and cruised into the end zone to give Bernalillo a 20-0 lead with 4:20 left in the second quarter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Spartans added another TD on a fantastic grab by WR <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1599893' first='Joseph' last='Duran']</strong> in the right corner of the end zone a few minutes later to give them a 27-0
