Sights and Sounds: Week 5 (Artesia-Gadsden Video/Recap + More)

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>ANTHONY</strong> – Artesia and Roswell showed us yet again Friday night that Class 5A is essentially the Big 2 and everybody else.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Artesia needed just one half to whip Gadsden, 35-7, at Sal Gonzalez Stadium. The Bulldogs built a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter before scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final 2-1/2 minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding 35-7 lead at halftime.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The teams came out for the second half and were lined up ready to go when heavy rains and lightning struck the area. After waiting about an hour, and with lightning still brightly lighting up the sky, both head coaches agreed to end the game and credit Artesia with the victory.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Roswell, meanwhile, trounced Deming, 58-19, at the Wool Bowl. Barring an upset, Roswell and Artesia clash Oct. 17 with the District 5A-2 championship and No. 1 seed in the 5A playoffs at stake.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Artesia set the tone early in their first-ever visit to Gadsden. On the Bulldogs' first offensive snap, speedy running back <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1139144' first='Bryce' last='Parra']</strong> got the pitch, turned the corner and sped down the sideline virtually untouched for an 83-yard TD run.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Following an exchange of turnovers and a red zone stop by the Artesia defense, Bulldogs quarterback <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1672571' first='Derrick' last='Warren']</strong> hit <strong>Jett Fuentes</strong> for an 18-yard TD pass for a 14-0 Artesia lead with 1:50 left in the first quarter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Just over two minutes into the second quarter, Artesia CB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1266497' first='Tootie' last='McNeil']</strong> intercepted a deflected pass and raced down the right sideline for a Pick-6 touchdown.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Trailing 21-0, Gadsden finally got on the board with a short TD run by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1357130' first='Juan' last='Rios']</strong> with 4:03 left in the second quarter. However, just when it appeared Gadsden was back in the game, Artesia scored a pair of touchdowns in less than two minutes to create the 35-7 score.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Warren found WR <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1600893' first='Trent' last='Egeland']</strong> for a 9-yard TD pass with 2:36 left in a second quarter. After a defensive stop , Artesia got the ball back and Warren connected with Egeland again for a 17-yard TD pass with 51 seconds left in the second quarter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Artesia improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in District 5A-2.
