For Week 5, I decided to check out a battle between two teams sitting at 2-2, looking to gain momentum heading into the second half of the season— Omaha Westview hosting Lincoln North Star. I was expecting a gritty game between these two, and it was exactly that. Lincoln North Star started the game off with a strong opening drive that led to a touchdown. From there, each team exchanged offensive possessions that didn't yield much, with both teams' defenses settling in early. Lincoln North Star's defense bent but didn't break, as they gave up only a field goal midway through the second quarter and went into halftime holding a 7-3 lead. This remained a defensive battle for the majority of the game, with Westview finally breaking out in the second half behind a tough running game that helped chew the clock and chip away at the North Star defense. They scored two rushing touchdowns to increase their lead to 17-7 in the fourth quarter. However, it was far from over as the Gator offense scored on a catch-and-run touchdown to draw within four points. Ultimately, the Westview Wolverines were able to close out a hard-earned 17-13 victory.

Our player of the game goes to [player_tooltip player_id='1085197' first='Sage' last='Giddings'], who recorded 15 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown, which doesn't necessarily "pop" off the page, but was impressive with the toughness shown in his runs. He has a very powerful base with an outstanding contact balance, which makes him difficult to bring down on first contact. Even on 2-3 yard gains, he made defenses work to bring him down, eventually wearing them down as the game went on. Giddings also does a good job finding creases in between the tackles and has the burst to hit those holes hard. This offense is tough to get off the field when #2 gets going!

Another player who really brings a different level of intensity to the field is senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='923428' first='Aaron' last='Kolala'], who had several big stops for the Wolverines. Kolala ended the night with seven tackles and a TFL. Although Aaron might be considered "undersized" by some metrics, he outplays that with a relentless motor and a mean streak that he brings to the field. Kolala is a versatile defender who I can see playing linebacker or a safety/LB hybrid at the next level. He's proven his ability to pressure the QB with his explosiveness off the ball and twitch when coming around the edge. Good closer once he's in the backfield. Aaron also demonstrated that he can play off-ball effectively by quickly flipping his hips to drop into his coverage assignment and can defend the ball at the catch point. Huge steal at this point in the '26 cycle!

Both defenses made it hard for either QB to really get going, but that didn't stop Westview's [player_tooltip player_id='1590714' first='Scott' last='Miner II'] from finding ways to continue moving the ball. Miner completed 75% of his passes (15/20) for 85 yards and a passing touchdown, with another 16 yards and a score on the ground. He made smart decisions with the ball and knew to take what the defense gave him. Scott took shots downfield, delivering a catchable ball with great placement for his receiver to pluck. He can also rifle passes over the middle of the field and deliver them with good timing. He is also a threat to break free on the ground with solid speed and power to battle through tackle attempts. Scott's game is still growing, but there is already a lot to be excited about with the young Wolverine's QB!

Another bright young star for the Wolverines is sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1870044' first='Kingston' last='Moore'], who has already established a great connection with fellow '28, Miner. Kingston tied for the team lead in receptions with four, which went for a total of 29 yards in a tough defensive battle. What really impresses me about Kingston is how aggressively and physically he plays the wide receiver position. He's willing to battle through press coverage at the line of scrimmage and can spar in some hand-fighting with opposing DBs. At the catch point, he displays great concentration and strong hands that allow him to come down with the ball even through contact. I don't have a 40-time for Moore, but his game speed seemed legit with the ability to threaten defenses vertically if they let him slip past them. Moore also had some great reps on the defensive side of the ball. Huge upside!

Overall, the entire Wolverine secondary had a great game, but one player who stood out the most throughout the game was senior [player_tooltip player_id='1370432' first='Jacob' last='Lasley']. Jacob recorded the sole turnover of the game as he picked off a pass that shut down a North Star drive right before halftime. Lasley showed nice grit playing out on the perimeter, making sure to make life as difficult as possible for the opposing receiver. He has the agility and quickness to keep up with receivers throughout their route and knows how to attack the ball at the catch point. Good footwork and fluid hips keep him fluid in coverage. Uncommitted senior who can make a difference at the next level!
