As part of my plan for more comprehensive in-season coverage, I want to do weekly reactions to Thursday and Friday night games. In this "recap" article, I will make my rounds across the state discussing scores, breakout performances, surprising upsets, and more. Here are my reactions from the Week 1 Thursday Night Lights slate of games. Information from the games is still being reported, so I apologize for any inaccuracies in the stats, information, etc.

I'll start with the game I attended, #2 Omaha Westside vs. #3 Omaha North, where the Warriors defeated the Vikings 58-27. I'm not necessarily surprised by the result, as I had Westside narrowly beating a tough North team. Instead, it was the [player_tooltip player_id='1085158' first='TayTay' last='Jenkins'] show as he rushed for well over 200 yards and recorded four rushing touchdowns in a dominant opening night performance. This was a huge statement win for Westside, sending a message to the rest of Class A that they are hungrier than ever. Omaha North still looks like a true player in Class A, especially as the offense continues to settle. I will provide a more in-depth analysis of this game in my game report article, which I will release later this weekend. Elkhorn South stifled a visiting Lincoln East team to the tune of 30-7. RB & Fresno State commit [player_tooltip player_id='488108' first='Jaydon' last='Sutko'] had a breakout performance as he rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Another key note from this game is that sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1652203' first='Luke' last='Valasek'] has established himself as QB1 moving forward. He wasn't asked to do too much, but still stepped up to the plate nicely with two passing touchdowns. #8 Millard West pulled off the slight upset over #6 Millard West, beating them 23-12 and avenging their loss to the Mustangs from last season. The final Class A game features #9 Lincoln Southeast hosting the Grand Island Islanders. The Knights are a sleeper team with lots of high-level talent, and it showed with their 30-0 victory. In Class B sole game, the York Dukes flexed their defensive muscle by shutting out the Hastings Tigers 21-0. Class C2's Superior won a slugfest against their Class C1 opponent, Fairbury, beating them 7-0. The Wood River Eagles kept the momentum of last season's playoff squad rolling into 2025 with a big 27-6 win over Centura. The biggest surprise of the night was the Bloomfield Bees shutting out powerhouse Stanton, which won the championship in '23 and was the runner-up in '24. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1868654' first='Brock' last='Jeannoutot'] led the charge with 21 carries, 140 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns to go with 15 total tackles, two TFLs, and a fumble recovery. When the dust settled, Bloomfield stood victorious 30-0 over the Mustangs. Also in D1, our preseason #1, Dundy County-Stratton, took care of business, defeating Perkins County 46-16. Wisner-Pilger is a team that I see teetering on breaking into the Top 10 in D1, thanks to a strong offensive line and defense, as well as playmakers at the skill positions. They made a statement with their 44-8 win over Lutheran Northeast. Hemingford pulled off an upset over our South Loup, beating them 44-18. The Bobcats had no answer for the multi-faceted Hemingford rushing attack with [player_tooltip player_id='1814899' first='Jacob' last='Bryner'] (111 yards & a TD), Zaine Feist (73 yards, 12 ypc, & a TD), and [player_tooltip player_id='1869980' first='Talon' last='Payne'] (177 yards & 3 TDs) all dominating on the ground. For D2, the Mullen Broncos opened their 2025 campaign with a 54-8 win over Sandhills Valley. Class D6 was another busy class, with two preseason-ranked teams starting 1-0. We saw #9 Silver Lake beat Shelton 44-27, and #7 Hay Springs defeated Paxton 46-21. Creek Valley beat Minatare 59 -22. Potter-Dix visited our neighboring state of Colorado to take on Peetz but fell 47-20 in their season opener.
