The Wyandotte Bears knew they were going to have to battle in 2024 but this was a brutal season when you look back on it. Originally, Wyandotte was supposed to be in Class A-1. And after the emergency redistricting shuffle in April, they found themselves up in Class 2A-2 and in one of the toughest districts in the state. And it certainly played out like that as this district had five very talented teams that were all capable of being playoff teams but only four could make it. Wyandotte started fast, jumping out to a 3-0 start. They dropped their first two district games to Colcord and Kansas but bounced back with three straight wins, including a 28-27 victory over Salina. That should have been enough to lock in their playoff spot. They lost to Adair in week nine and then beat Keys in the regular season finale. The Bears were 7-3 and had a 4-3 district record. We simply don't see very many 7-3 teams not make it into the playoffs but this is just how this district played out. The Bears were in a three-way tie with Kansas and Salina for the final two playoff spots. And in the case of a three-way tie, it goes to district margin of victory and Kansas and Salina had more district points, so they got the final two spots. Just a brutal way to miss out on the postseason. The Bears had survived through an injury-plagued season but because of the tiebreaker, they ultimately were on the outside looking in. But Wyandotte is ready to begin a new season and they aren't going to need much motivation this fall. There is a lot of unfinished business to take care of and they are looking forward to the challenge.

2025 OUTLOOK

Wyandotte is going to come into the 2025 football season with one of the bigger chips on their shoulders. The Bears bring back basically everyone from last year's team and come into this season as a top ten team in the Class 2A-2 preseason rankings. Because the Bears dealt with injuries at several positions last year, they bring back a ton of players that have starting experience. In fact, They have 25 players entering this season that started games for them last fall. Offensively, the Bears could be one of the better units in Class 2A-2. Again, injuries really hampered them last season but it starts with the quarterback position. When healthy, Wyandotte is going to have one of the more productive quarterbacks in the class. Last year they averaged around 25 points per game but we think that they could certainly get above 30 and even start flirting with 40 points per game based on the experience and production they bring back. Defensively, it's a similar story where the Bears bring back more than 11 guys that have starting experience. That will certainly help as they try to navigate the waters of Class 2A-2 and specifically the district that they are in. They gave up 18 points per game last fall and just like the offense, we would be surprised if they don't improve on that number this season. Now, the district will once again be tough. Both Adair and Salina are top five teams in the preseason rankings. But Colcord and Kansas were hit hard by graduation. So while they will still be competitive, this doesn't feel like a district that is incredibly top-heavy going into 2025. But for the Bears, they are going to go into this season looking to leave no doubt that they are a playoff team.

All eyes will be on the quarterback position this season as senior signal caller [player_tooltip player_id='1169618' first='Hunter' last='White'] will be one of the better quarterbacks in Class 2A-2. He had a monster breakout season in 2023 as a sophomore but his junior season was hampered by nagging injuries. Because of that, he finished the year with a little under 1,000 passing yards and eight touchdowns with nearly 350 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. When White is healthy, he's one of the best quarterbacks in this class. And he'll be a big key to Wyandotte potentially making a run in 2A-2 this fall.

With Wyandotte dealing with injury issues at quarterback, they needed a running back to step up and [player_tooltip player_id='1720265' first='Kason' last='Threet'] was able to do that during his junior season. He led the team in rushing with nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns. It was a breakout season for Threet as he got more responsibilities on the offensive side of the ball, while still maintaining excellent play on defense from his linebacker position. Threet is the first of three linebackers on this spotlight portion as the Bears have a lot of experience and production returning there. Threet is a two-way player to watch.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1360248' first='Mason' last='Brown'] gives Wyandotte an incredible two-way threat at wide receiver and at linebacker. Offensively, Brown was one of the more productive players in the passing game. He led the team in receiving with a little over 400 yards and four touchdowns. He was also among the team's leaders in tackles with just over 100 on the defensive side of the ball. It was his second straight season where Brown finished the year with over 100 tackles. But heading into this season, Brown is looking to repeat his defensive production and expand his game on offense.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1360247' first='Terry' last='Hembree'] is the leading returning tackler from last year's team. Hembree would finish his junior season with 110 tackles and he was a dominant defender in the open field. He thrived in one on one situations and was far and above the team's leader in solo tackles. He also led the team in tackles as a sophomore in 2023. Needless to say, he's going into his senior season with high expectations. Not only to lead Wyandotte in tackles for the third straight year but he wants to firmly establish himself as one of the top linebackers in Class 2A-2.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - AT Quapaw
- For the second straight year, Wyandotte kicks off the regular season against Quapaw. This has been a back and forth series but right now, it favors the Bears as they've won the last two meetings, including last year's 25-0 shutout victory. This will be the tenth straight year these two have met.
Sept. 12th - Ketchum
- Ketchum was a district foe from 2020-2023 and then after the redistricting shuffle, these two started a non-district series last year. Wyandotte beat the Warriors 43-6 last season and it was their second straight win and their seventh in the last nine meetings with Ketchum.
Sept. 19th - Fairland
- The Bears will wrap up non-district action with a home game against Fairland. Last season, this game didn't take place after a forfeit and Wyandotte got the victory. Fairland will have a new head coach this season but the Bears are looking to win their second straight and 12th in the last 14 meetings.
Sept. 26th - Colcord
- District play kicks off in week four with a home game against Colcord and this is the first measuring stick game for the Bears. Colcord shut out Wyandotte last year but they have a new head coach and they were hit hard by graduation. The Bears look to snap a seven-game losing streak to Colcord.
Oct. 3rd - AT Kansas
- The Bears hit the road to face off with Kansas in week five in another critical district contest. Wyandotte lost a 21-20 heartbreaker to the Comets last season. In fact, the last two losses to Kansas have been by a total of seven points. This is a game that can change your destiny as a playoff team.
Oct. 10th - Chelsea
- The second half of the regular season gets started with a home game against Chelsea, This has been a series that Wyandotte has owned historically. They beat the Green Dragons 41-7 last season and they've won the last seven meetings. Last year's win was the first meeting since 2019.
Oct. 16th - AT Salina
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Wyandotte goes on the road to face Salina. This is the first of two massive district contests in October that could make or break Wyandotte's district title chances. Last year, they beat the Wildcats 28-27. It was their first meetin since 2019.
Oct. 24th - Commerce
- In week eight, Wyandotte hosts Commerce and this game takes place in between arguably the two toughest games on the Wyandotte schedule. Last year, the Bears beat Commerce 41-32. And with that win, they snapped a four-game losing streak to Commerce. They can't afford to look ahead here.
Oct. 31st - AT Adair
- On a Halloween Friday night, arguably the toughest test for Wyandotte takes place as they go on the road to face off with Adair. Last year, the Warriors won 40-14 and they've won the last 11 in this series. They also won the district title last year. This could be a head to head clash for this year's district crown.
Nov. 7th - Keys
- In the regular season finale, Wyandotte will host Keys in week ten. The Bears beat the Cougars 27-6 last season to wrap up the regular season. This year, they're hoping to get a win here and use it as momentum for a playoff run. Last year's meeting was the first between these two since 2007.

NOTABLE

At this time last year, we wrote about Wyandotte and how the Bears were one of a handful of teams that had their entire 2024 season changed with a court ruling in April. Originally, the Bears were supposed to be in Class A-1 for the 2024 and 2025 football seasons. When a court ruled in favor of the private schools in April, that sent us into an emergency redistricting shuffle and plenty of schools were moved up and down and into new districts. The Bears went from a team that could compete and make the A-1 playoffs to bumping up to Class 2A-2 and more importantly, dropped into one of the more competitive districts in the state. We mentioned how there were five teams in this district that all felt like solid playoff teams and of course, the problem would be there are only four spots. And despite going 7-3, they were tied with two other teams for the final two spots and came up short on district margin of victory. It was just a brutal way for the season to end for a team that was rock solid. Now, they certainly will use that as a chip on their shoulder when taking the field in 2025.
