Following a extended break for camping and 7x7 season, we return to our City Series with a look at the top running backs in Northern New Mexico:

[player_tooltip player_id='853063' first='Isaiah' last='Dominguez'], St. Michael's: The Horsemen have had a renowned rushing attack for year and this year should be no different with Dominguez expected to ascend to the No. 1 role. He totaled over 1,300 yards and 15 TD in 2024. He also excelled on defense with 45 tackles. Dominguez has been busy on the camp circuit this summer and so far he's impressed with his skill set.

[player_tooltip player_id='853022' first='Peyton' last='Duncan'], Bloomfield: Duncan isn't just one of the top returning rushers the state after gaining almost 1,400 yards on the ground in 2024, but he's outstanding catching the football as well with 29 receptions for 740 yards. He also returns punts and plays defense. In short, he does it all. Overall, he totaled over 2,500 all-purpose yards in 2024 to help lead the Bobcats to the 4A state title. Duncan is a major reason Bloomfield is a contender to repeat as champions.

[player_tooltip player_id='1604744' first='Jordan' last='Herrera'], Los Alamos: If we had to name the top running back in northern New Mexico, Herrera would be a strong contender for the award. He emerged midway through last season for the Hilltoppers and finished with close to 1,400 rushing yards and 19. Toughness and fearlessness are his best traits. In Los Alamos' final nine games, he rushed for 120+ yards seven times, including 200+ yards twice. He ‘s workhorse. The Hilltoppers aren't hiding the fact they're going to ride Herrera all season long in 2025.

[player_tooltip player_id='1600856' first='Landon' last='Noble'], Newcomb: Speaking of workhorses, nobody carried the ball more than Noble last season. He had a staggering 301 rushing attempts, by far the most in the state. In fact, nobody else had over 270 carries. Noble was the main weapon in Newcomb's power run-dominated attack last season. Newcomb plans to throw the ball more in 2025, but Noble will still get his carries. Maybe not 300, but he'll feast. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

[player_tooltip player_id='1129687' first='Jonah' last='Villegas'], Pojoaque Valley: Villegas isn't the biggest guy around but he's lightning quick, tough as nails and very productive. He's just a rising junior but Villegas has already rushed for nearly 1,500 yards in his first two years for the ascending Pojoaque Valley program. Definitely has 1,000-yard potential if he stays healthy. Villegas and rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1416992' first='D'Marcus' last='Rodriguez'] (see below) will form an impressive RB duo in 2025. Watch out for the Elks.

Honorable Mention: [player_tooltip player_id='1787344' first='Justin' last='Degroat'] (Farmington), [player_tooltip player_id='853713' first='Reggie' last='Suazo'] (Taos), [player_tooltip player_id='1416992' first='D'Marcus' last='Rodriguez'] (Pojoaque Valley), [player_tooltip player_id='1600859' first='Sean' last='Torres'] (Miyamura), [player_tooltip player_id='1599942' first='Leonard' last='Martinez'] (Espanola Valley), Nick Halvorson (Piedra Vista); [player_tooltip player_id='1604784' first='Cael' last='Walton'] (Raton); [player_tooltip player_id='1137848' first='Saige' last='Westmoreland'] (Thoreau).
