2025 CHAPARRAL LOBOS PREVIEW

OVERVIEW

For Chaparral, the 2024 season was all about doing things for the first time. First, the Lobos snapped a 43-game losing streak stretching over six seasons in early September with a 26-7 victory over local rival Santa Teresa. Chaparral's last win before then had come in 2018 over El Paso (TX) Cathedral. Their last win over a New Mexico school had been in 2017.

Second, Chaparral qualified for the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Lobos traveled to Portales and stunned the Rams, 10-0, on their home field in the first round to reach the quarterfinals. The Lobos were eventually eliminated by Bernalillo, ending what should be regarded as a very successful season for Chaparral.

After changing the narrative surrounding the program in 2024, the Lobos aspire to reach new levels in 2025.

“Our guys are really locked in on making school history once again,” Chaparral head coach Joseph Frias told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “After earning our first ever playoff appearance and securing a first-round win, many of our guys believe it's championship or bust. Our team has the depth, experience and determination to build on last season and make a championship run.”

OFFENSE

Top 3 Players: [player_tooltip player_id='851884' first='Israel' last='Nieto'] (QB), [player_tooltip player_id='1155082' first='Raul' last='Lopez'] (RB), [player_tooltip player_id='1155065' first='Tyvin' last='Howard'] (WR).

Rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='851884' first='Israel' last='Nieto'] is one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in southern New Mexico, and arguably one of the most underrated players in the state. He has 1,000-1,000 yard potential.

Last season's leading rusher, rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1155082' first='Raul' last='Lopez'], returns to power the ground game. Lopez and Nieto combined for over 1,000 rushing yards in 2024, and should do the same thing again in 2025. Rising senior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1672745' first='Juan' last='Urquizo'] is back as well.

Four of the five receivers with 10+ receptions in 2024 return led by dynamic rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1155065' first='Tyvin' last='Howard'], who had 35 catches and averaged over 17 yards per reception during the 2024 regular season. Rising seniors [player_tooltip player_id='854303' first='Aaron' last='Eliserio'] and Leonardo Rangel will contribute as well along with rising senior tight end [player_tooltip player_id='1267002' first='Jesse' last='Ibarra'].

Promising newcomers [player_tooltip player_id='1613676' first='Saul' last='Contreras'], [player_tooltip player_id='1613670' first='Cesar' last='De La Rosa'], [player_tooltip player_id='1826173' first='Zahid' last='Chavez'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1826178' first='Aiden' last='Anguiano'] – all rising sophomores – look to contribute to Chaparral's potentially prolific offense. Contreras is listed as a QB, so he could be Nieto's backup this season.

Rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1751759' first='Martin' last='Morales'], who weighs about 290 pounds, and rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1567267' first='Miguel' last='Sierra'] anchor the Chaparral offensive line. Promising 6-foot-3, 285-pound rising sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1826184' first='Sincere' last='Torres'] joins them.

DEFENSE

Top 3 Players: [player_tooltip player_id='1155082' first='Raul' last='Lopez'] (DB), [player_tooltip player_id='1267002' first='Jesse' last='Ibarra'] (DE), [player_tooltip player_id='1155065' first='Tyvin' last='Howard'] (DB).

Many of the aforementioned players will play defense as well. The top two tacklers have graduated, but [player_tooltip player_id='1155082' first='Raul' last='Lopez'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1267002' first='Jesse' last='Ibarra'] are back after each registered over 100 tackles in 2024. Lopez will be the strong safety while Ibarra plays defensive end.

[player_tooltip player_id='1155065' first='Tyvin' last='Howard'] (70+ tackles in 2024) returns at free safety. Leonardo Rangel will line up somewhere in the secondary. [player_tooltip player_id='854303' first='Aaron' last='Eliserio'] is the middle linebacker. [player_tooltip player_id='1567267' first='Miguel' last='Sierra'] anchors the defensive line. [player_tooltip player_id='1672745' first='Juan' last='Urquizo'] and [player_tooltip player_id='851884' first='Israel' last='Nieto'] both had over 80 tackles in 2024.

[player_tooltip player_id='1613670' first='Cesar' last='De La Rosa'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1613676' first='Saul' last='Contreras'] both had over 40 tackles as freshmen in 2024. [player_tooltip player_id='1826187' first='Rafael' last='Solis'] had over 25 tackles as a freshman to bolster the secondary.

2025 Chaparral Football Schedule:

Aug. 22 at Gadsden (7 p.m.)

Aug. 29 at Hatch Valley (7 p.m.)

Sept. 5 at Santa Teresa (7 p.m.)

Sept. 12 NMMI (7 p.m.)

Sept. 20 at Albuquerque Academy (Sat., 2 p.m.)*

Sept. 26 MANZANO (7 p.m.)*

Oct. 3 VALENCIA (7 p.m.)*

Oct. 10 at Silver (7 p.m.)*

Oct. 18 at St. Pius X (Sat., 1 .m.)*

Oct. 24 Bye

Oct. 31 PORTALES (7 p.m.)*

* District 4A-2 Game

CHS is proud to welcome Coach Frias to the Lobo pack.
