On Saturday, May 3 I was fortunate enough to be invited to cover You Are Athlete's New Jersey Regional Exposure Camp. This event had a double session that features middle schoolers first and high schoolers second. As is customary whenever I attend an event, the first thing I take note of are the prospects that have the clear, physical measurables to immediately compete at the next, immediate level of play – also known as the eye test.

A pair of New Yorkers made the trip down to the Garden State... First up was King Kumahlor. Kumahlor was a very big and broad prospect. These physical traits made it difficult for running backs to evade him when they simulated drills between the box. I thought that he relied on this a bit too prematurely though. As he presses the line, Kumahlor ought to break down a bit further upfield to close in on and claim more space... [player_tooltip player_id='1570210' first='Dylan' last='Burbridge'], also an Empire State prospect, played linebacker but, to me, profiled a bit better as an edge player. To his credit, when in coverage Burbridge outright attacked the ball in various ways: plucking it out of the air, breaking up passes, or trying to punch one loose. Furthermore, as I pegged him as an edge player, I expected Burbridge to get beat in coverage. That said, I did not notice him lose a matchup throughout the competition.

Coming from Connecticut, Uzziah Nelson was another prospect that I thought would excel off the edge. Should he continue his career at linebacker, I encourage him to get down hill a bit faster. Not all is lost, however. In my opinion, I felt that Nelson brought and use his hands to the fight well... Nardy Candio, an inner-city Philadelphia prospect, came on out to compete - and there was much to like. First, Candio had really good feet that allowed him to get to his spots and take away angles effectively. When engaging with blockers, I noticed that he used the stab move effectively. Also in his repertoire was a great rip move, as well as the ability to get his hips around the corner whne pass rushing.

The lone Jersey prospect that I was able to take note of was [player_tooltip player_id='1684768' first='Louis' last='Mazzarisi']. Mazzarisi effectively squeezed the air out of any space when he was paired up against running backs in the cat & mouse drills. I would, however, like to see a tad bit more aggression out of him when he attacks the line of scrimmage on those reps. In hindsight, this is promising for an 8th grader who wanted to compete with the older kids.
