BERNALILLO – Seven-on-7 is a quarterback-driven game, and designed primarily to help them during the off-season as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Saturday, the most impressive quarterback during the annual 7-on-7 Tourney hosted by Bernalillo High School was 2027 Sandia QB [player_tooltip player_id='1594010' first='Jahleel' last='Lewis'], who already stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 215 pounds. His rocket arm was prominently on display during Saturday's event. Most of his throws had tight, perfect spirals. Lewis is extremely accurate on deep throws. In short, he can sling it.

By this time next year, Lewis should be attracting significant recruiting interest.

Another QB who impressed? Valley 6-foot-2, 170-pound rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1600815' first='Jose' last='Jaramillo'], who led the Vikings all the way to the tourney championship game. Jaramillo divided snaps last season with a senior, but the job should be his entirely in 2025. He has 3,000-yard potential.

Saturday was also an opportunity to watch a few quarterbacks with large shoes to fill. Rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1791395' first='Caydin' last='Encinias'] looks to be the new QB at West Last Vegas, replacing C.J. Perea, who currently sits in the Top 10 on the state's all-time passing yardage list.

Rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1752436' first='Anthony' last='Willie'] takes over for Uriel Castro in Bernalillo. Castro was an elite two-sport for the Spartans and committed to Eastern New Mexico in baseball.

New Espanola Valley head coach Caleb Holbrook has installed a more pass-friendly offense. The Sundevils threw the ball just 15 times in 13 games last season but rode a power running game to the Class 4A semifinals. Under Holbrook, Espanola Valley could throw the ball more in the first game than they did all of last season.

Biggest beneficiary? Six-foot-2, 205-pound rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1137865' first='Irvin' last='Primero'], who threw 13 of Espanola Valley's 15 passes and rushed 78 times for 5 TD in 2024.
