On Saturday, May 10th, 2025 I was welcomed back for the third year in a row to cover Coach Nick Pennisi‘s PSR Big Camp Series hosted at Monroe High School in Monroe, New Jersey. As I have come to expect, this event was packed with participation, loaded with talent, and ran extremely well.

Different than other events, Pennisi opted to have three different check-in times, based on position groupings. This afforded me the opportunity to get a closer look at many of the prospects in attendance. Below are just some of my notes on the position group mentioned in this article's title.

The first of an outstanding crop of defenders was out of New York's Holy Trinity, rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1639428' first='Darnell' last='Rink']. Rink showed that he had great closing speed from the trail position, as he undercut a throw for an easy pick. I also caught him blanketing a receiver on a dig route that played similarly to the pick he had early, albeit he only broke this pass up... [player_tooltip player_id='1691952' first='Najay' last='Best'] out of Piscataway showed that he is a fighter through-and-through. The Chief fought never gave up on a pass as it arrived, often fighting, scrapping, clawing, and wrangling each rep that was tight all the way down through the ground.

[player_tooltip player_id='1691953' first='Walcott' last='Gesira'], who has a twin brother in Fabregas, made the trip up from Montgomery to compete. I liked how Gesira demonstrated that he possesses a good sense of the ground and is comfortable moving in all directions, as well as playing with good bend/stance/pad level. In coverage I thought that he was just a tad bit too handsy when his matchup broke the stem of his route. Granted it was just one rep, but something to be mindful of none the less... As Jersey City's Dickinson looks to break out of the Super Football Conference's Ivy Division, I saw a prospect that underscores the type of raw athleticism that occupies their hallways. Although he got his hips turned around late and was beat, [player_tooltip player_id='1691954' first='Carlos' last='Santiago'] made a tremendous recovery to close ground, not panic, and made a play on the ball - a pick actually - on an under thrown ball.

Not necessarily known for their football, I was throughly impressed by the performance of Weehawken's [player_tooltip player_id='1691955' first='Resendo' last='Holdrege']. Despite his matchup's best efforts Holdrege maintained air-tight, zip-lock type coverage throughout his route and was not deceived by such fakes. On that very same play, his matchup lost balance and fell to the ground - to which Holdrege kept playing and intercepted the pass over his matchup's body before they hit the ground... I close out with a hometown product of the host facility, Monroe's [player_tooltip player_id='1673631' first='Jules' last='Johnson']. Johnson was another prospect that stuck like glue to his opponent. I noticed that Johnson's eyes did not stray away from his opposition, keying his opponent well, never allowing himself to get faked out. As a result, Johnson rewarded himself with a clean pick.
