ROCK HILL | Fort Mill walked away as the winner of Thursday's Cordarelle Patterson 7-on-7 held at Northwestern. The event was cut short after lunch time due to the wet bulb (excessive heat) rule.

We were out for the morning session and have plenty of news and notes to pass along as over a dozen teams from the Catawba River Region, Midlands, Upstate and Pee Dee were in attendance:

The Jackets went undefeated, with one tie coming against Northwestern.

Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1149056' first='Quinn' last='Kelly'] made some nice throws to keep the offense on schedule, especially involving the quick game. He threw one dart over the middle against N orthwestern that was nice to see. He connected with Jameson Terrell on a diving catch for a touchdown against Kennan. Terrell made an acrobatic grab towards the end of the game as well.

The defense got involved as Mason Burt did a nice job of jumping the route to make an interception before Andrew Kowalski snagged one on a pass right over the middle. The Jackets also forced another interception against Northwestern as well.

NEW FACES AT QB1

This was our first time getting to see presumptive Northwestern starting quarterback Xavier Means, taking the reins from Finley Polk, now at Gardner Webb University. He looked solid on the first series, excelling on the quick passes to the sideline. He connected on a touchdown early on.

David Flood caught a touchdown on a slant for the Trojans near the end of the session against Fort Mill. Amareon Coleman had a pick for the Trojans as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1734628' first='Jason' last='Horton'] (pictured above) transferred in from Cardinal Newman and appears to be the new quarterback for the Rock Hill Bearcats. He has a nice arm, is athletic and can set his feet and make accurate throws – one of his favorite targets was Kameron Wilson. We've seen Wilson a few times already, and he looks primed and ready to have a big 2025. He ran a go route for a touchdown against Crest.

Over at Chester, Jackson Wilburn takes the reins from Trooper Floyd, and he saw decent playing time in 2024, and we'll be interested to see how he develops as we get closer to the start of the 2025 season. Amari Nesmith will be the go-to target for him, if today is any indication. He looked comfortable with running the shallow routes.

VETERAN RETURNERS FOR KENNAN

Kennan coach Jarrett Neely has a team that is full of rising juniors and seniors, and that should bode well for them in the Midlands this fall. Jamari Johnson at quarterback made one throw that was a bullet to his receiver, Deon Hollis, who had a man draped all over him for an impressive catch. Jamori Benson made an interception on a pass that went to the endzone.

YOUTH IN LAURENS

Laurens head coach Greg Porter will likely have three freshmen that will play varsity football in 2025, beginning with quarterback Logan Bragg, who has a nice spiral on his throws. He connected with Mason Young on a dig early on against Lewisville. Porter expects Travion Robinson to play a significant role in 2025 as well. Braden Yarborough had a nice pass breakup deep in Raider territory as well.

ADDITIONAL NUGGETS

Rock Hill DB Nighel Lightner nearly had an interception on a play against Laurens.

Laurens RB Nehemiah Fernandez made a catch out of the backfield and let his speed do the rest for the touchdown.

Lewisville RB [player_tooltip player_id='616374' first='Mikel' last='Hutchins'] had a catch and run on a pass out of the backfield for a touchdown.
