Quick Hits: Catholic League #1

Jackson, now heading into his Junior season, has a chance to legitimately be one of the most valuable players on De La Salle. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Jacob's first highlight is a 30-yard field goal from the left hash. Plenty of leg, and accurate. Most of the tape shows kickoffs. Not anything fancy here- a ton of touchbacks, and a really nice squib at 1:12, and an onside kick at 1:23. Lastly, there's a few punts from 1:38-2:17. If De La Salle stalls out anywhere near midfield, Jackson has a good chance of pinning the enemy deep. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>If Jackson can consistently hit FGs, consistently kick touchbacks, and consistently pin the opposition deep, De La Salle's championship odds skyrocket. Great open-field tackle after great open-field tackle. Connor's first highlight is a great quick hit on the opposing RB running a seam. Because of Connor's reaction time, the back drops the ball and forces a punt. Next, a great open-field tackle on a receiver in the flat- a TON of plays very similar to this. Connor is great at reading, reacting, and bringing the hammer on the tackle. Plus, a lot of his tape is against good competition (Cass Tech, Northville). </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Joshua is an outside linebacker, usually lining up off-ball but at times creeping toward the line of scrimmage. Plays like 1:12 show good ability to shoot the gap and attack the inside or off-tackle run. Then, 1:31 is a great read and stop on the screen pass. Joshua is a well-coached, disciplined linebacker. Angelo just happens to be one of St. Mary's best receivers, and he has the highlights to prove it. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>His first highlight shows a safety-splitting TD in the State Championship. Just run the route faster than the DBs can react- good job. Second, a really nice fade in the back of the endzone with a DB right on him. Credit the QB for getting it there, and big credit for Angelo for reaching out and making the one-handed grab. Finally, the third highlight shows a great inside release, immediately earning separation from both the corner and the safety.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Angelo is twitchy, has better release than most, and generally has a lot of very nice traits. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>After writing the above, I checked Angelo's Twitter. Zero surprise to see a D1 offer. William is a hard-hitting linebacker, usually lining up off-ball, but is no stranger to on-ball play. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>0:24 is the first play I'd like to mention. From his off-ball position, William immediately reads inside run, shoots the B gap, and makes a hard tackle on the RB. At 0:35, William lines up on-ball, does an excellent job reading the RB, and makes an extremely impressive stop from the backside. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I really commend William for his play speed. I see why Brother Rice sends him on so many blitz packages- this is an extremely reactive, fast-playing, hard-hitting linebacker. I don't know how his testing numbers are, but those matter a lot less when your tape is this good. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Just like Angelo, I had no idea William had D1 offers before writing this. Good- because it's rare to see a linebacker who plays this fast. For whatever reason, William slipped through the cracks in our rankings.
