They are often the differentiator in key contests, obviously coveted by next-level offensive coordinators and cheered on by fans. So what is this sometimes scarce commodity?

Game-breaker backs...

In this report we are focusing on different types of game-breakers who play different positions and are from multiple classes. To start we will turn the spotlight on a couple of young gun QB's on the rise and then take a look at three running backs, two getting ready to roll as juniors and a senior getting ready to leave scorched earth on the gridiron this fall.

So, without further adieu, let's take a closer look at the Weekend Five:

[player_tooltip player_id='1645153' first='Easton' last='Melton'] , 6'1”, 165, QB, Maize, '28. Up first is a young gun who is already turning heads as a rising-star QB coming up on his sophomore season. My KC-counterpart, Santino Bernal, reported rave reviews for his performance in a recent 7v7 competition in the KC area playing for the Wichita Wheat. A dangerous dual-threat already, he is quick and agile and a threat extending plays. He already has efficient passing mechanics, excellent feet, and can make all the throws, from short surgical strikes and deep velocity throws to the long-ball touch pass. His anticipation, processing speed and working through progressions is mature for his age. He is still sorting out spring camp logistics but will be at Friends today (Sunday) and finalize spring-summer plans shortly. This guy should be on every scout's watchlist as his skills won't be denied. He is going to make some noise in the very near future.

[player_tooltip player_id='1590409' first='Tyler' last='Davis'] , 5'11, 175, QB, Shawnee Mission North, '28. He is another young baller on a great trajectory who is going to surprise people this fall. As an athletic, dual-threat quarterback he can beat you with his legs as needed but will really inflict serious damage through the air. I have been impressed with his tight pocket mechanics, quick release and excellent ball placement at all levels. He has a strong arm but doesn't try to over-power receivers and is adept at fitting the ball into tight windows with nice touch. His eyes are another strength, as he looks defenders off and keeps focused downfield even when the play breaks down or under duress. He has his spring and summer training mapped out, working in his team's off-season program and fine-tuning routes with his receivers rather than hit the camp circuit. This guy has all the tools and with a little experience under his belt is getting ready to bust out.

[player_tooltip player_id='1343588' first='Tahj' last='Edwards'] , 5'10”, 175, RB, Lawrence, '26. He is the first running back out of the chute in this report, and is coming off a junior season that was just a warm up for the big season ahead this fall. After running, receiving and returning for 1,000+ yards and 12 TD's last year he put the state on notice of what is to come. He didn't waste any time last year showing his potential as in the second game of the year he ran for 255 yards and scored two TD's. Currently, he is running track and is starting to generate interest from the college ranks. This past weekend he was at Washburn and is headed to UCO on the 17th of this month. He is also planning on the Varsity Combine in late April, then the K-State and Tulsa Prospect Camps in June. His lifting and speed work is paying off as he is bigger and faster than last season. The Lions appear to have some firepower on offense and this guy is going to be one of the key contributors this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1610915' first='Cylis' last='Luther'] , 5'10, 175, RB/DB, Blue Valley SW, '27. He is a versatile two-way playmaker who caught my eye last season as a stud-in-the-making on both sides of the ball. He picked up good experience running the ball and gave fans and coaches a good look, averaging six-plus yards per carry. On defense he adapted exceptionally fast and showed he can line up as a smothering cornerback, play as a centerfielder safety with an eye for the ball or even move down in a hybrid-LB role and deliver with great closing speed. His instincts and ability to diagnose plays quickly enables him to collapse on the ball in a hurry. He showed signs early he was ready to play and ended up with 45 tackles and recovered a fumble for the season. His off-season training has been strong, with consistent lifting, speedwork and plyometrics. He decided to skip spring sports this year and put a laser focus on this fall. This guy is getting ready to blow it up in 2025.

[player_tooltip player_id='1125716' first='CamRon' last='Fields'] , 5'10, 180, RB, KC Washington, '27. He is another Kansas City-area all-purpose running back who is coming off a standout junior year as a threat running, receiving and as a return man. On the year he piled up 1,500+ total yards and scored 15 touchdowns in a variety of ways. As a RB, he is a dynamic threat with great burst and instincts finding even the smallest gaps. Last fall he averaged a sizzling 14 yards every time he touched the ball, which included a blazing 99-yard TD run. He also caught 32 passes, averaging 16+ yards a catch and was a dangerous return man. Needless to say, they intend to move him around as a tailback, H-back, in the slot - wherever they can get him a little separation, as that's all he needs. Right now he is running sprints and doing the long jump in track and is also playing AAU hoops in his spare time. This guy spells trouble for opposing defenses and is locked and loaded for a big season.

In conclusion, get these guys on your watchlist as they are getting ready to decimate defenses this fall. Give me a shout via DM on X if you run across any guys flying under the radar.
