From nearby Rock Hill to as far away as Huntington, West Va., close to 40 middle schoolers participated in the East Middle School Camp. They spent 2 ½ hours going through various individual drills and receiving instructions during one-on-one activities.

Thriving in such a venue was (pictured) wide receiver Kellen Rife. The 5-foot 10, 150-pound Huntington eighth grader posted the best time in both the shuffle run and L drill.

He also displayed solid pass-catching skills to earn one of the Prep Redzone gold-chain awards.

Rife credited his performance to ‘working consistently, always putting in hard work and training every single day.'” He believes Sunday's camp was a “learning experience” which will help him when he moves up to varsity.

The group of wide receivers in attendance showed potential with their speed and toughness. At 4-foot 10 and 100 pounds, eighth-grader Alfonszo Peterson of Saluda Trail was the shortest wide receiver at the camp.

His pass-catching and consistent scores in the drills also earned him a gold chain. Joining him and Rife as wide receiver honorees were [player_tooltip player_id='824759' first='Amari' last='Green'] (Southside) and [player_tooltip player_id='1593778' first='Jake' last='Erlandson'] (Cane Bay).

The quarterback position saw 6-foot 2, 185-pound Weston Michalak stand tall as a potential ninth-grade starter. The Ambassador Christian eighth grader showed a fluid, powerful release and nimble footwork during obstacle drills.

[player_tooltip player_id='1069233' first='Caden' last='Young'] of Cardinal Newman and Seldon Peden of Christ Church Episcopal were also named top camp quarterbacks with Michalak. Each scored high in individual drills while displaying dual-threat ability.

The running back position award winners were [player_tooltip player_id='437772' first='Brayden' last='Boults'] (Ebenezer), [player_tooltip player_id='865974' first='Jemo' last='Stinson'] (Mountain View Prep) and Dakarai DeLaO (Oscar Smith).

“I feel like I can be a good contributor as long as I keep pushing yard and working hard,” said Boults, who will attend Crestwood High School.
