Week 9 of the 2024 New Mexico High School football season is complete. Here is our ninth edition of the Weekly Whiparound, our deep dive into everything that happened on the field in the Land of Enchantment:

Teams of the Week: Volcano Vista (6A); Roswell (5A); Bloomfield (4A); Tohatchi (3A); Tularosa (2A).

Volcano Vista (7-1 overall, 3-0 district) dominated the line of scrimmage by rushing for 371 yards on 54 carries in a impressive 33-0 road victory at Rio Rancho Friday night. The victory by the Hawks sets up a massive Week 10 showdown with Cleveland at Lightning Bolt Stadium with the winner likely claiming the District 6A-1 championship and a top four seed in the playoffs. Senior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1257357' first='Mason' last='Gurule'] led the ground assault with 151 yards and 3 TD on 20 carries on an extremely windy night. Volcano Vista attempted only 20 passes. The Hawks led, 7-0, after the first quarter before adding three TDs in the second quarter for a 26-0 halftime lead. Volcano Vista's defense had 7.0 TFL, 5 QB hurries and 9 passes defended as they posted their 1st shutout of the season. They haven't allowed more than 8 points in their last six games.

Roswell (6-1, 4-2) earned the Best Comeback of the Week award after rallying past Artesia (5-3, 4-1) in the latest Clash of the Titans between the top two programs in Class 5A. The Coyotes trailed, 34-22, entering the 4th quarter before scoring 22 straight points to take a lead they would never relinquish. RB [player_tooltip player_id='1118273' first='Xai' last='Carrasco'] began the surge with a 10-yard TD run with 11 minutes left. Artesia fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Roswell recovered. The Coyotes quickly scored on a 21-yard run by [player_tooltip player_id='1594192' first='Jaylon' last='Cloud'] and converted the 2-pointer to take a 37-34 lead on two TDs within 12 seconds. Carrasco added another 10-yard scoring run midway through the 4th quarter to increase Roswell's lead to 44-34. Artesia RB [player_tooltip player_id='1118283' first='Frankie' last='Galindo'] scored for the Bulldogs with 4:36 left. Artesia got the ball back at the Roswell 41 with 3:24 left but the Roswell defense stood tall and forced the turnover on downs. Roswell drained the rest of the clock for the key win. Artesia and Roswell are tied for 1st place with identical 4-1 district records but the Coyotes own the tie-breaker.

Bloomfield, which has lost just one game since midway through the 2022 season, remained unbeaten at 7-0 (they're only playing 9 regular season games since the opener was cancelled by severe weather) by holding off Bernalillo, 20-7, at home in a battle of the top two ranked teams in Class 4A. Bloomfield led, 13-7, in the fourth quarter when [player_tooltip player_id='853022' first='Peyton' last='Duncan'] raced 31 yards for a TD midway through the 4th quarter. Duncan finished with 200+ rushing yards on 24 carries. Bloomfield scored 2 TD in the 1st quarter to grab a quick 13-0 lead. QB [player_tooltip player_id='615635' first='Blake' last='Spencer'] passed 11 yards to [player_tooltip player_id='1137877' first='Kaleb' last='Hutchens'] for the first TD and later connected with [player_tooltip player_id='1594564' first='Kaden' last='McCown'] for a two-TD lead. Bernalillo's lone score came on a TD pass from QB [player_tooltip player_id='615632' first='Uriel' last='Castro'] to WR [player_tooltip player_id='1599893' first='Joseph' last='Duran'], the first points allowed by the Bloomfield defense since Week 1. Bloomfield forced 5 turnovers on a rainy and windy night in the Four Corners.

Tularosa (6-3, 3-0) could be the surprise team in Class 2A this season. The Wildcats traveled to Eunice and pulled out a dramatic 39-36 road win over the Cardinals, overcoming 232 passing yards by Eunice QB [player_tooltip player_id='854273' first='Elijah' last='Melancon'] and 106 rushing yards by elite RB [player_tooltip player_id='615650' first='Eljan' last='Woods']. Tularosa has a one-half game lead over unbeaten Texico (2-0 in district) and those two teams clash Friday night in Tularosa.

Players of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1257357' first='Mason' last='Gurule'], Volcano Vista (6A); [player_tooltip player_id='615425' first='Amiri' last='Mumba'], Highland (5A); [player_tooltip player_id='1154948' first='Isaiah' last='Carpenter'], St. Pius X (4A); [player_tooltip player_id='613197' first='Omar' last='Loya'], Dexter (3A); [player_tooltip player_id='1595788' first='Nehemiah' last='Simpson'], Navajo Prep (2A).

[player_tooltip player_id='1257357' first='Mason' last='Gurule'] carried 20 times for 151 yards, amassed 179 all-purpose yards and scored 3 TD in Volcano Vista's 33-0 win over Rio Rancho.

https://twitter.com/MasonGurule/status/1847758445350371511

Best Team Offensive Performance: Volcano Vista. The Hawks ran for nearly 400 yards against a good Rio Rancho defense.

Best Team Defensive Performance: Bloomfield. In a high stakes District 4A-1 game, the Bobcats limited Bernalillo to minus-14 yards rushing on 18 attempts and held the Spartans to just 7 points.

Best Games: Roswell 44, Artesia 40; Gadsden 32, Lovington 28.

Gadsden (6-2, 3-2) pulled out another historic victory as they scored late to edge Lovington, 32-28, at home. The Panthers beat Lovington for the first time since 1954. Lovington scored on a 6-yard TD pass and converted the 2-point conversion to take a 28-25 lead with about 5 minutes remaining. But Gadsden responded with a long drive capped by QB [player_tooltip player_id='615513' first='Kelly' last='Stevens']' 1-yard TD plunge with less than a minute remaining for the game-winning points. The second half, which began with Gadsden holding a slim 20-19 lead, featured four lead changes. Gadsden rallied from a 14-0 deficit at the end of the 1st quarter. The Panthers scored 3 TD in the 2nd quarter ([player_tooltip player_id='1119637' first='Adrian' last='Munoz'] rushing TD, [player_tooltip player_id='615673' first='Alfredo' last='Andrade'] rushing TD, Munoz to [player_tooltip player_id='1119699' first='Zakk' last='Minjarez'] Passing TD).
