PAWLEYS ISLAND | In the season opener against Georgetown on August 30, [player_tooltip player_id='1395098' first='AJ' last='Lee'] returned a kickoff 88 yards, only be tackled on the 1-yard line.

His teammates spent some time letting him know how close he'd come.

During Friday's 30-27 win at Waccamaw, Lee took advantage of his second chance. The junior took a second-quarter kickoff 85 yards - for a touchdown this time - to add another highlight to an evening that otherwise already included plenty.

“When I saw that ref start waving his hands I said ‘Nah'” Lee said, citing getting stopped short against Georgetown. “Tonight, I had to remind myself of that. I looked up and saw green grass and I just hit it. It felt good.”

Lee, who entered the game with 235 rushing yards and three scores on the ground in two games (he sat one game for a minor ankle injury), started off sluggish against the Warriors. However, near the end of the first quarter, he got hot and spurred an 83-yard drive that ended with his 1-yard touchdown run seconds into the second quarter.

By halftime, he'd put up 71 yards and a score on the ground to go along with that big return. Then, he and [player_tooltip player_id='1013054' first='Brandon' last='Cumbee'] took over in the would-be deciding drive of the game.

Andrews took over with 9:56 to play on its own 3-yard line. What ensued was the two backfield mates putting the win away by bleeding every bit of time while only attempting one pass. After 15 plays and two kneel downs, Andrews sealed the victory.

Lee finished with 22 carries for 117 yards and, of course, the type of kickoff return his teammates won't be using as fodder for mild jabs the next few days.

“I came up in the ninth grade and I really wasn't ready for it,” Lee said. “I came back last year and I was working, working. Now it's finally paying off.”

OTHER ANDREWS STANDOUTS

Cumbee was instrumental in that final drive, as he put up 36 of his 114 yards to go along with two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. He also completed five first-half passes for 66 yards.

Sophomore Dutch Stafford also got into the fold for the Yellow Jackets. On five consecutive carries in the third quarter, he put up 45 yards to set up one of Cumbee's touchdown runs. Stafford finished with 63 yards on the ground.

A name to watch the rest of the way is Andrews defensive tackle Da'Viyon McNair. The 6-foot-1, 320-pounder was able to clog up a ton of space in the middle of the field, something that will be of vital importance for the Yellow Jackets come region play.

WACCAMAW STANDOUTS

The Andrews performance outshined a spectacular one from Waccamaw tailback [player_tooltip player_id='1344769' first='Zaireon' last='Skinner']. The senior finished with 10 carries for 116 yards and three touchdowns (from 71, 10 and 12 yards out). Combined with Bryce Holloway (10 carries, 50 yards), it appeared the Warriors have their two-headed monster ready to go for region play.

However, they only got one carry in the fourth quarter thanks to that clock-sucking drive.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='473016' first='AJ' last='Grate'] had a nice play near the end of the second quarter following an Andrews passing play in which he stripped the ball from a receiver and maintained possession. The play prevented the Yellow Jackets a chance to score again just before the break.

Colin Behney hauled in a 13-yard touchdown reception amid heavy traffic in the second quarter. He also showed off his left leg with his four punts on the night. He averaged 44.5 yards on those kicks, two of which hit at least 50 yards.

Greg Hall also had three big plays on defense and special teams against the Warriors. In addition to recovering an onside kick attempt in the second half, Hall also had a sack and recovered a fumble.
