WEST COLUMBIA | [player_tooltip player_id='309825' first='Grayson' last='Clary'] (pictured) has seemingly settled into the starting quarterback role at Daniel.

Playing at neutral site Airport High School, the sophomore helped rally the Lions twice against Stratford for the 52-36 victory. Clary completed 15-21 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a score in the team's 17th consecutive victory.

Clary targeted six different Daniel wide receivers, with [player_tooltip player_id='1360192' first='Jason' last='Bish'] leading the way with six receptions for 126 yards. His 69-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter started the first comeback as the Lions trailed 14-3.

Running back [player_tooltip player_id='986041' first='Tremaine' last='Davis'] led the ground game with seven carries for 154 yards and two touchdowns. He displayed breakaway speed off the line of scrimmage on both a 39-yard touchdown to open the second quarter to Daniel ahead 17-14 and his 46-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter.

“For us, it's just all the hard work and dedication we put in the past few weeks,” Clary said. “We had a great plan coming into this week. The o-line blocked great, had a great game. We were able to assert the run game towards the end of the game. That helped out the passing game.”

Clary and Davis' contributions, aided by offensive linemen [player_tooltip player_id='346200' first='Rocky' last='Herd'], Brooks Abernehty, PC Russell, [player_tooltip player_id='1693690' first='Andrew' last='Galloway'] and Logan Konareski, were nearly overshadowed by Stratford running back [player_tooltip player_id='1253901' first='Kerwin' last='Squire']. The senior had 25 carries for a career-high 272 yards and two go-ahead touchdown runs of 69 and 68 yards.

“Kerwin's a young man who's come to our program and really worked hard,” Stratford head coach Dennie McDaniel said. “Last year, he split time and has really put in the work in the off-season and he's going to be somebody we'll lean on heavily while we've got some young receivers that we have to develop. He answers the bell every time and I'm just proud to watch him develop and grow over the past couple of years.

Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1165148' first='Jachin' last='Davis'] also kept Stratford in the contest. He accounted for 215 passing yards, including a 61-yard touchdown to wide receiver Shawn Harris and rushed for two scores.

Stratford defensive linemen [player_tooltip player_id='1573961' first='Wes' last='Snowden'], Otis Carter, [player_tooltip player_id='464896' first='Darrell' last='Holmes'] and linebacker Warrick Yoder managed to collect a couple of sacks on Clary and forced him into throwing an interception to defensive back Jordan Crawford. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Clary also displayed his physical prowess in knocking over tacklers on power runs.

For all the offensive contributions, the turning point of the game took place on special teams. After Stratford sent the kickoff deep for the first time trailing 38-36 in the fourth quarter, Christian Chancellor fielded the football and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown.

Daniel's defense, which got stops from players like tackle [player_tooltip player_id='1263869' first='Damien' last='Parker'], forced another punt which was followed by Davis' game-clinching touchdown run.

“Tremaine is a great guy to have,” Clary said. “He should be a (Division) I athlete. He's a fantastic guy. He's a better guy than he is a football player and that's the thing I love about him. He's a great guy to have beside him being a younger quarterback. It instills a lot of confidence in you and he's a great teammate as well.”

Now in Class 4A after winning Class 3A three of the past four years, the Lions (2-0) face another Class 5A opponent next Friday. This time, they will only have to travel 4.5 miles to face J.L. Mann as compared to the more than 111 miles it took to reach West Columbia.

Stratford (0-2) has a similar short trip next week as well when it visits Fort Dorchester.
