Preseason 5A All State 1st & 2nd Team – Defense

The Oregon 5A Preseason All-State team is structured to highlight those individuals who project to be the most valuable on their individual teams. It is NOT a list with just the top recruits. Instead of honorable mention picks you will see extended 1st & 2nd team selections. Also referenced will be the Offensive & Defensive POY candidates.    Please note that this is not an all-conference breakdown, so it will be much more difficult to make this team when incorporating the entire state. Defensive POY Candidates (#1-4)     1.[player_tooltip player_id='739439' first='Tony' last='Cumberland'] 26' DE Willamette   2.[player_tooltip player_id='1095838' first='Jack' last='Brauckmiller'] 27' DE Canby    3.[player_tooltip player_id='511864' first='Mark' last='Wiepert'] 25' S Wilsonville    4.[player_tooltip player_id='754595' first='Ceville' last='Pasi'] 25' LB Churchill          There is still a lot yet to be determined from a POY standpoint, but Oregon 5A football will feature two of the nation's top underclassmen, something very rare for the state.    5* DE [player_tooltip player_id='739439' first='Tony' last='Cumberland'] has the potential of being the most dominant player to ever come through the state per the 5A classification. The Wolverines went 0-9 last year so we will know quickly how influential he is.    We've already talked about [player_tooltip player_id='1095838' first='Jack' last='Brauckmiller'] on offense, but he is equally dangerous on D. His early offer from UNLV was well deserved as most of the nation's top programs will likely vie for his services. If Canby does well this year he could thrive from an accolade standpoint.    [player_tooltip player_id='511864' first='Mark' last='Wiepert'] was the Offensive POY in Oregon and could easily earn the same award on defense. As a junior he racked up an unreal 121 total tackles with 7 tackles for loss.   If Churchill plays good ball this season it will be because of 2x 1st team all-conference LB/RB [player_tooltip player_id='754595' first='Ceville' last='Pasi']. His dominance the last few years has kept the Lancers competitive. They will need him to replicate what he's done, and then some, to counter the 11-17 record from the last three seasons.    1st team all-league DE [player_tooltip player_id='957947' first='Garren' last='White'] is one of the best players in Oregon you might not know about yet. His stock is rising quickly. [player_tooltip player_id='1103729' first='Camden' last='Roofener'] comes from a football family for anyone familiar with some of Glencoe's top guys from back in the day.    Much like Brauckmiller, remember the name [player_tooltip player_id='937033' first='Cody' last='Mitchell'] out of Crescent Valley. The 6-5 DE earned all-conference honors as a freshman and could blow up on the recruiting front this season.    The 5A LB's have a relatively deep group, led by two 6-5 D1 commits in [player_tooltip player_id='407173' first='Austin' last='Simmons'] (Washington St) and [player_tooltip player_id='406754' first='Jackson' last='Doman'] (BYU). Simmons will project at TE, but the state wrestling champ Doman could play D at the next level.    Looking at the other LB's you see numerous 1st team all-conference guys returning led by Pasi. [player_tooltip player_id='406775' first='William' last='Ingle'] went off as a junior making 93 total tackles, with 15 TfL's, and 6 sacks while helping Wilsonville to the state title.   The Intermountain Conference has a couple good ones back in [player_tooltip player_id='1104662' first='Marco' last='Larsen'] of Summit and [player_tooltip player_id='1043374' first='Parker' last='Gibson'] of Redmond. We will see if the Storm can continue their 5A success with Redmond being one of the most intriguing group of kids to watch this season.    4A Tri Valley Conference POY [player_tooltip player_id='285879' first='Jacob' last='Thayer'] returns and will lead a La Salle group that is moving up to the 5A level.    The DB's are not the deepest but still noteworthy with POY candidate Wiepert playing the Strong Safety/WLB position. 1st team all conference returner [player_tooltip player_id='1104615' first='Tristen' last='Collins'] had an outstanding junior season at Thurston with [player_tooltip player_id='1209513' first='Craig' last='Maynard'] of West Albany grabbing 2nd team accolades.   In closing, two other underclassmen to keep an eye on who could be 1st team all-state defensive backs include [player_tooltip player_id='1232740' first='Ty' last='Hattenhauer'] of Caldera and 6-3 [player_tooltip player_id='1232736' first='Wyatt' last='Horner'] of Redmond, a very versatile athlete.
