Louisiana's high school football season is — at least unofficially — off to the races.

The state won't actually kick off its regular season until Sept. 5, a late start because of the way Labor Day weekend falls on the calendar.

But a slew of high-profile matchups between talented teams have interest, attention and highlight reels already piquing with this weekend's scrimmages and next weekend's jamborees.

A pair of reigning district champions from the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas helped headline the scrimmage action.

Here's a look at 10 players who stood out from St. Amant and Archbishop Shaw's tune-up.

[player_tooltip player_id='934561' first='Rontrae' last='Carter'] — 5-11, 165 DB/LB — Archbishop Shaw (2027)

The Eagles' young standout, already entering his third season of starting varsity action, snatched not one, but two interceptions on the evening and took each dashing quickly back the other direction toward the end zone. The first return during the early numbered-plays segment of the scrimmage for about 30 yards down inside the 5-yard line came back on a blocking penalty during the return, but Carter took another late in the evening winding 87 yards to the far end zone. He was also an active, hard-hitting tackler around the box and showed his quick burst off the edge.

[player_tooltip player_id='913900' first='Jasper' last='Parker'] — 6-1, 185 RB — Archbishop Shaw (2025)

The early-going of Thursday's action was the [player_tooltip player_id='913900' first='Jasper' last='Parker'] show powering behind his Eagles' offensive line between the tackles and consistently gaining solid yardage both before contact, including a couple of big gains bouncing outside, and after, where he his legs were in constant motion driving for additional ground even when seemingly wrapped up by one or multiple defenders.

[player_tooltip player_id='912251' first='Sheldon' last='Green'] — 6-3, 200 LB — Archbishop Shaw (2025)

The long, lead edge-rusher appeared to have bulked up a little from when he first hit are radar and rankings about 15 months ago and played strong in the box not only showing his explosiveness in his tackling, with his ability to work through and shed blocks and not be derailed by the sizable St. Amant line.

[player_tooltip player_id='914202' first='Caleb' last='Ricks'] — 6-1, 170 DB — St. Amant (2025)

The tall, long cornerback is one of the Gators' couple returning leaders on defense and one of Louisiana's top remaining uncommitted senior prospects and looked the part of a Division-I prospect from the initial eye-test to his largely lockdown coverage to his side of the field, including successfully defending an end-zone pass his way during the initial numbered-plays segment of the scrimmage to force what would have been a turnover on downs.

[player_tooltip player_id='940926' first='Jacob' last='Washington'] — 6-3, 180 WR — Archbishop Shaw (2025)

The Eagles worked a clearly scaled-down offense Thursday with starting quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1221203' first='Mason' last='Wilson'] limited in a red jersey. But once they got rolling establishing the run game early with Parker, they dialed up a couple deep shots to their Michigan commit on the outside and finally broke through with a long strike down the middle of the field.

[player_tooltip player_id='1237796' first='Cooper' last='Babin'] — 5-11, 170 QB — St. Amant (2026)

and Timothy Johnson — 5-9, 145 WR — St. Amant (2025)

The Gators return their productive passer at the helm of the offense, and Babin — with father Seth Babin, himself a former St. Amant and Southeastern Louisiana quarterback, calling the plays — did a great job moving around and out of the pocket, buying time and getting the ball to his playmakers, including multiple deep shots. Johnson caught at least three of those looks downfield, including a pair of touchdowns, to help lead the receiving performance along with Kaven Taylor and Jaquan Gordon.

Ethan LeBeau — 6-4, 285 OL — St. Amant (2027)

How well and how quickly the Gators' young offensive line comes together will be a pivotal factor in the team's overall outcomes this season. And the big, sophomore left tackle St. Amant is already trusting to protect its passer has the early look of a potential prospect for fans to get to know this year and for the years to come.

Easton Humphrey — 6-0, 160 DB — St. Amant (2025)

The recent Belhaven baseball commit was among a handful of Gators during both first- and second-team portions of the scrimmage to stand out with hard-hitting tackles and then also came away with arguably the team's defensive highlight of the night when he snatched a ricocheting ball for an interception and dashed 27 yards to the end zone to put St. Amant on the scoreboard in the live quarter.

Jarrad Brown — DB — St. Amant (2025)

Washington finally got the big touchdown catch, but not without having to battle first through some great plays by the Gators' cornerback to deflect multiple previous deep shots by the Eagles. Brown's listed 5-foot-8, 130-pound numbers might be old measurements, but he gave up notable size to the Michigan commit, considered among the state's top receivers, and still held his own.
