The Regent Prep Rams came into the 2023 season with high expectations. They were a top five team in the Class B preseason rankings and they brought back the majority of their starters. It was also going to be their last season playing 8-man football as they are ready to move up to Class A-2 this fall. The season began with a high-scoring affair with Weleetka. They won 64-40 and that began a four-game winning streak to start the year. Regent would trip up in early October, losing to Drumright 32-27. Drumright was definitely one of the surprise teams of the 2023 season and they would go on to make a run last fall. Despite the loss, the Rams would bounce back in a major way with dominating wins down the stretch. They went into the playoffs looking to make another run to the state championship game. They would roll in the first round but had a second round showdown with Dewar. They would survive another high-scoring affair, winning 55-48. The following week in the quarterfinals, they gave up 50 points to Oklahoma Bible Academy but still won by 20 points. Then came a semifinal showdown with Seiling. They lost 42-40 and the season came to an end with an 11-2 record. The two losses were by a combined seven points. And Seiling would go on to win the state championship the following week. The 11-2 record was their fifth season in the last six years where they won at least ten games. Now, the attention turns to the future and the 2024 season will certainly bring change for Regent Prep and their football program but they are ready for the challenge.

2024 OUTLOOK

That word “change” will be the theme for Regent Prep going into the 2024 season. They're changing classes, they'll have a lot of change in their starting lineup and the biggest change comes from the style of play itself. The 2024 season will be the first for Regent Prep as an 11-man football program. And there is no doubt that this has been one of the more consistent winners over the last decade so it will be interesting to see how they make that transition and what year one looks like this fall. And we mentioned the changes in the starting lineup and it's not an ideal one for a team that is moving up a class and adding three more players to both sides of the ball. Only one starter is back on the offensive side of the ball but on the positive side, that one starter might be the best quarterback in Class A-2 football this season. So he will have new faces all around him but he's also going to be a guy that can make a lot of things happen on his own. The defense also brings back only one starter and that's a side that we're looking forward to seeing how they look. There were a lot of high-scoring fights last season but part of that is just the 8-man game. How will the Rams look on defense is a big question we'll be looking at this season. But there is a silver lining to all of this change and it's the class itself. Regent isn't going from 8-man football to an 11-man class featuring 60+ schools. Class A (along with 2A and B) is split into two divisions and Regent comes in as a top ten preseason team in Class A-2 and they are looking to continue their winning ways in the first year of playing 11-man ball.

If Regent Prep is going to continue their winning ways in 2024, the biggest key that we can see coming into the season comes on the line of scrimmage. The Rams need new guys to step up on both sides of the line but junior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1339125' first='Cole' last='Brookover'] is a guy that the Regent Prep coaches believe could be primed for a breakout year this fall on offense. The Rams should be able to score points with the firepower they have at the skill positions. But if they want to continue winning double digit games and playing deep into the playoffs, you win in November and December in large part because of the line of scrimmage. Brookover will be a big key to that.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that Regent Prep is going to have one of the top quarterbacks in Class A-2 this season. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='595670' first='John' last='Mark Roller'] is that quarterback and we're fired up to see what he can do at the 11-man level. He has put up some monster numbers over the last few seasons but he is way more than another 8-man quarterback that can fill up the stat sheet. He's a legitimate quarterback prospect so he's going to instantly be one of the top quarterbacks to watch in this class. Now, he'll have a ton of new names around him so more of the pressure will be on him early on in the season. But we don't think that he'll shy away from that challenge.

In order for Roller to be as dominant as he could be, he'll need new skill guys to step up this season. One of those players that Regent Prep expects to have that breakout season this fall is senior [player_tooltip player_id='1339135' first='Shae' last='Smallwood'] and they also expect him to move around and play a variety of positions this fall. When they were talking about some of the top returning players they have coming back, Smallwood was right behind Roller in terms of the seniors returning. Smallwood is listed as a running back and a wide receiver so it's clear that he's going to be very important to what they do on the offensive side of the ball. If he has that breakout season, this offense could be lights out once again.

Sept. 6th - AT Haskell
Sept. 13th - Summit Christian
Sept. 20th - AT Morrison
- The move to 11-man football will bring a new schedule and new opponents. One of those new opponents is in week three when the Rams will hit the road to face Morrison. Before district play begins in week four, they'll face a Morrison team that has been one of the more consistent winning programs for a long time. The Rams will be looking to pick up some momentum before they enter district play. If they can go on the road and get a big win here, they'll make a loud statement.
Sept. 27th - Liberty
Oct. 4th - AT Central Sallisaw
- In week five, we hit the halfway mark of the regular season and it also kicks off the biggest two weeks in Regent Prep's regular season. They face the other two district teams that are ranked in our Class A-2 preseason rankings and if they can go 2-0 here, they could be in the driver's seat for the district crown. They face Central Sallisaw on the road here and this is a team that surprised a lot of people last year. They went from 6-4 in 2022 to a 12-1 team last season.
Oct. 11th - Gore
- After Regent Prep faces Central Sallisaw, they'll return home to take on Gore. The Pirates come into this season in an opposite position to the Rams. While Regent Prep has to replace almost all of their starters on both sides of the ball, Gore is bringing back almost everyone. And they aren't far removed from the 2022 season where they played for the Class A state championship. There is no doubt that they'll expect to contend again this fall and this will be a big test for the Rams.
Oct. 17th - AT Allen
Oct. 25th - Mounds
Nov. 1st - AT Talihina
Nov. 8th - Wewoka

NOTABLE

Regent Prep officially joined the OSSAA in 2016 and the Rams were successful right away and immediately climbed the 8-man ladder. After two seasons in Class C, they moved up to Class B in 2018 and made the state championship game in back to back seasons. In the last six seasons, Regent Prep has won at least ten games in all but one year. Now, the challenge of playing 11-man football is next up for the Rams. And as we mentioned earlier in the preview, this isn't the best year to make that transition as the Rams are incredibly inexperienced from a returning starter standpoint. But there is a blueprint out there that Regent Prep could follow. About a decade ago, Rejoice Christian was in a similar position where they started as an 8-man program and quickly moved up to 11-man football. There were growing pains but there was also winning. From 2014-2019, they made the Class A playoffs every season and won at least one game when they got there. There were also back to back trips to the semifinals in 2018 and 2019. The Rams look to follow that same path as they enter Class A-2 this season.
