Throughout the month of July and even into August, we are publishing well over 100 of the most in-depth team previews that you'll find anywhere to get you completely ready for the 2024 football season. This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the Hominy Bucks!

Hominy Bucks

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #3 In Class A-2
Preseason Coaches Ranking: #1 In Class A-2

Head Coach: Caleb Christian - 9th Season - 61-23 Record At Hominy

2023 RESULTS (13-1 Record - Lost In Class A Semifinals)

Aug. 25th - Beat Kellyville 54-0
Aug. 31st - Beat Cleveland 41-12
Sept. 8th - Beat Pawhuska 38-16
Sept. 22nd - Beat Pawnee 55-22
Sept. 29th - Beat Oklahoma Union 49-6
Oct. 5th - Beat Morrison 42-8
Oct. 12th - Beat Chelsea 49-6
Oct. 20th - Beat Tonkawa 14-0
Oct. 27th - Beat Woodland 23-20
Nov. 3rd - Beat Chouteau 28-12
1st Round - Beat Allen 47-0
2nd Round - Beat Wyandotte 49-7
Quarterfinals - Beat Apache 40-0
Semifinals - Lost To Hooker 27-24

2023 Offensive Scoring Average: 39.5 Points Per Game
2023 Defensive Scoring Average: 9.6 Points Per Game

History repeated itself in 2023 as the Hominy Bucks would go unbeaten in the regular season but finish 13-1 with a tough loss in the semifinals. For the second straight year, Hominy finished 13-1 but it was definitely an exciting ride along the way. They began the season as the #2 team in our preseason rankings. It didn't take long before they climbed into the top spot and held that ranking for basically the entire season. They backed up all the preseason hype with dominant wins in the early part of the season, including a 38-16 victory over rival Pawhuska. They had back to back showdowns in October with Tonkawa and Woodland, winning both. We were in the house for the win over Woodland and it did not lack drama. The Bucks would stun Woodland in the final minute to win 23-20 and clinch the district championship in the process. It was somewhat poetic that on senior night, two seniors connected for the game-winning touchdown. The Hominy dominance continued into the playoffs, as they outscored their first three opponents by a combined score of 136-7. But they ran into Hooker in the semifinals and the Bulldogs would upset the Bucks 27-24 before falling to Fairview in the title game. The Bucks continue to show that they are one of the better small school programs in this state. They've been knocking on the door of contending for the state title and this year, they want to kick that door down.

2024 OUTLOOK

The Bucks are once again a top five team in the preseason rankings as we enter the 2024 season. They come in at #3 in our rankings and the coaches in Class A-2 have put them in the top spot going into 2024. The Bucks bring back half of their starters from last year but the biggest question heading into this year will be surrounding the quarterback position. The Bucks have had one of the best players in the state at quarterback over the last few seasons. Now, he's graduated and the keys to this offense and to the team in general get handed over to someone new. But looking at what Hominy has coming back and who that might be, we're not overly concerned about this team when it comes to athletic ability. The offense will bring back six starters and while there will be a new quarterback, there will also be a lot of familiar faces, specifically on the offensive line, which should help the new QB1. On defense, the Bucks bring back five starters and this is a unit that was absolutely dominant last season. They gave up less than ten points per game and had two shutouts in the playoffs. Again, while they have several new faces on that side of the ball, there's also a lot of returning skill coming back to make this unit one to watch. And finally, there's the new landscape in Class A. It's been split into two divisions and the Bucks find themselves in the new Class A-2 for at least the next two years. This opens the door to a somewhat young team coming together quickly to continue their dominance in their respective class.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Bryon Marshall - Wide Receiver
Jaxon Woods - Quarterback/Defensive Back

PLAYERS TO WATCH

At this time last year, we were writing about [player_tooltip player_id='858870' first='Blaine' last='Hipp'] following a breakout freshman season in 2022. We said that Hipp had the potential to be one of the top playmakers in Hominy's passing game at the wide receiver position. This year, Hipp is expected to be the quarterback for the Bucks as they hand the reins to the offense to him moving forward. And there's one thing that we like about that move and it's the fact that they're going from one terrific athlete to another one with Hipp. As he goes into his junior season, we expect Hipp to have a similar breakout year but from the quarterback position. It will be fun to see how this transition plays out.

Hominy's defense was lights out throughout the 2023 football season and one returning starter is senior [player_tooltip player_id='1329118' first='Christian' last='Roland'] at the linebacker position. Hominy's coaches are very excited about Roland's potential coming into this year to be the leader of this unit. Like we mentioned, this was a defense that was dominant in 2023. They'll look to continue that throughout the 2024 football season and Roland will certainly play a big key. From his linebacker position, look for Roland to be like an extension of the coaching staff and helping some of the new starters get where they need to be early on in the year. Roland could end up being one of the better linebackers in the class.

Senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1329117' first='Elijah' last='Hughes'] is a player that the Hominy coaches really like coming into this season. He's a player that they expect to have a big 2024 season and if the Bucks continue to light up the scoreboard on offense, Hughes should have a monster season. He's listed as a wide receiver but it looks like the plan is for Hughes to be a big part of what the Bucks do in general. They are going to get creative with how they keep him involved and look to him to make plays throughout the season. If Hughes emerges as the top target in the passing game, he could end up being one of the better breakout players at the wide receiver position this fall.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='479396' first='Elijah' last='Gilley'] - 2025 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1403601' first='JR' last='Lookout'] - 2026 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1709318' first='Randee' last='Goodeagle'] - 2026 Running Back/Linebacker

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Sept. 5th - Cleveland
Sept. 13th - AT Pawhuska
- It's the annual rivalry clash between Hominy and Pawhuska in week two. The Bucks will go on the road to face a Pawhuska team that is also a top five team in their respective class coming into the season. While they're in Class A-1, this is a great match-up to see where each team measures up very early on in the season. The Bucks have won three out of the last four against the Huskies. Prior to that, they had lost four in a row and they look to keep the bragging rights this year.
Sept. 20th - AT Pawnee
- For the first time in several years, the Hominy-Pawnee match-up won't have playoff implications as this game is now a non-district contest with Pawnee competing in Class A-1 for at least the next two seasons. The Bucks have gotten the best of the Black Bears in the last two years to open up district play and the 34-0 win in 2022 snapped a three-game skid to Pawnee. While this game doesn't have playoff implications. Both teams will want a win before district play opens up.
Sept. 27th - AT Summit Christian
Oct. 4th - Ketchum
Oct. 11th - AT Woodland
- There aren't many games in Class A-2 that will be more anticipated than this week six match-up when Hominy goes on the road to face Woodland. This year, the roles will almost be reversed as it's Woodland that comes into this season as the preseason number one team while Hominy is a top five team. When they met in late October last year, it was the other way around and the Bucks got a critical win in the final minute. This year, the district title will more than likely be decided here once again.
Oct. 17th - Fairland
Oct. 25th - AT Porter
Nov. 1st - Barnsdall
Nov. 8th - Afton

NOTABLE

There is no debate that Hominy has been one of the more consistent small school programs in Oklahoma and that consistency has lasted decades. In 2023, the Bucks would make their 26th consecutive playoff appearance and that is one of the longest active streaks in the state right now. Hominy is coming off back to back 13-1 seasons to go along with back to back semifinal appearances. Now, with the new split in Class A, the Bucks find themselves in a position where they are not only still a contender, but in most years, they could end up being the favorite in Class A-2. This is a program with not only consistent success but a long history of winning and it wouldn't be surprising to see them start rattling off some state championships in the very near future. They have the history of it with five in school history and they come into this season expecting to contend for the Class A-2 state title as a top five team in the preseason rankings.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2023 - 13-1 - Lost In Class A Semifinals
2022 - 13-1 - Lost In Class A Semifinals
2021 - 7-4 - Lost In Class A 1st Round
2020 - 5-5 - Lost In Class A 2nd Round
2019 - 7-4 - Lost In Class A 1st Round

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

5 State Championships

2016 - Beat Wynnewood 42-14
2001 - Beat Velma-Alma 3-0
1983 - Beat Hollis 16-12
1982 - Beat Cyril 39-0
1973 - Beat Wynnewood 21-0
