The Chickasha Fighting Chicks are looking to build some consistency with their program as they can have winning seasons and playoff appearances but are looking to start rattling them off in consecutive years. After a 7-4 season in 2022, Chickasha would go 4-6 in 2023 and they are hoping to turn things around in a big way this season. The 2023 campaign would be under new leadership as Chickasha alum Joe Molder was named head coach after being an assistant for the Fighting Chicks for a decade. The season was a bit of a roller coaster for his first season as they would end up going 4-6 and missed out on making it back to the playoffs. The season started with some rough losses to El Reno and Marlow but they bounced back with a win over Anadarko to avoid the 0-3 start. District play had a promising start as they began 2-1 in district play and 3-3 overall after wins over John Marshall and Woodward. But the Fighting Chicks lost three more district games down the stretch to miss out on the postseason. It came down to a week ten game with Cache and Chickasha came up short, losing 21-16. Now, as we turn our attention to the 2024 season, Chickasha looks to get back to winning football and a trip back to the playoffs.

2024 OUTLOOK

The outlook for Chickasha's 2024 season looks like an uphill battle when you see the schedule. The Fighting Chicks are in arguably the toughest district in Class 4A and there are heavy hitters everywhere on this schedule. They were originally supposed to be in a district similar to the one they've been in the last two years but that changed with the emergency redistricting shuffle in April. Now, they're in a district with two top five teams, including the defending state champion and another top ten team. The schedule, combined with the hit they took to graduation makes for a very interesting 2024 campaign. But the Fighting Chicks are optimistic that they have a team with young talent that is ready to take the next step and start shining bright under the Friday night lights. Five starters return on the offensive side of the ball and they'll need a new quarterback to step up but we do like what they bring back in the skill department and even at the quarterback position. Defensively, they only bring three starters back so that will be a challenge, especially early on in the season. But one plus with the brutal schedule is the timing of their district clashes with those top five teams. They won't see them until the final two weeks of the season so at that point, those new starters on both sides of the ball will know what to expect. We think if the Fighting Chicks can just avoid those setbacks throughout the year, they'll be in a position to fight for one of those playoff spots.

We watched Chickasha back in May at the Noble team camp and junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1286005' first='Jason' last='Kawaykla'] was a guy that really impressed us from the group of quarterbacks from each school there. First off, he doesn't look like a quarterback that hasn't been starting. We mentioned earlier how they had to replace their quarterback but they shouldn't be too worried about that. And Kawaykla is the reason why. He has a lot of poise and confidence in his game. Another word would be swagger and we're looking forward to seeing if he can carry that over into his game for Chickasha this fall.

At the same team camp that Kawaykla impressed, senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1353233' first='Justin' last='Cordova'] managed to do the same. In fact, Chickasha had two running backs that were getting the job done but we have to give the nod here to the senior. Running back is another position where Chickasha is coming into the year having to replace some significant production. But just like with quarterback, it should be a position where they feel confident that the guy ready to take the bulk of the carries moving forward is ready. Cordova could end up being a breakout player this season in Class 4A.

Chickasha can have all the talent in the backfield and out at wide receiver but if they don't have an offensive line to pave the way in the run game or protect the passer, it won't matter much. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1353232' first='Ryan' last='Hicks'] has the potential to lead this Chickasha offensive line and help the Fighting Chicks be one of the more improved offensive units in 4A football this season. Hicks is also listed on the defensive side of the ball so he'll look to have a complete impact on the line of scrimmage. If Hicks and this Chickasha offensive line play at a high level, Chickasha could very well make a run this season.

Aug. 29th - AT El Reno
Sept. 6th - Marlow
- In week one, Chickasha will have their home opener against a Marlow team that is expecting to be one of the top small school programs in Oklahoma this season. These two teams are familiar with one another after meeting every year in non-district play since starting this series in 2018. Chickasha won the first two in the series but it's been all Marlow ever since. The Outlaws have won four in a row and the last three haven't been particularly close. Chickasha looks to turn things around this season.
Sept. 13th - Anadarko
Sept. 27th - Bethany
- We mentioned earlier in the preview that arguably the toughest hurdle for Chickasha to overcome is the district schedule. It is not an easy one and it starts at home against a Bethany team that's in the preseason top ten. These two teams were district opponents in 2020 and 2021 and the Bronchos won both. The goal this season for Chickasha is to win games and fight for a playoff spot. They can't afford to lose too many of these district games so they'll need to be ready to go right when district play begins.
Oct. 4th - AT Ardmore
Oct. 11th - Harrah
Oct. 17th - AT Madill
Oct. 25th - AT Tecumseh
Nov. 1st - Tuttle
- Chickasha is saving the best for last as they play the top two teams in their district with Tuttle and Blanchard in the final two weeks. In week nine, they host a Tuttle team that has been a massive thorn in their side over the last five years. They haven't met anytime recently in the regular season but in each of the last three times that Chickasha has made the playoffs, Tuttle has been the team that has sent them packing. And by the time this game rolls around, Chickasha will know exactly what they need to make the playoffs.
Nov. 8th - AT Blanchard

NOTABLE

Last season was Joe Molder's first year as head coach of the Chickasha football program but he's no stranger to Chickasha football. First off, he's an alum of Chickasha but prior to being named head coach of his alma mater, he was also an assistant coach for a decade. And during that decade, the Fighting Chicks had many different head coaches and it's now Molder's turn to hopefully turn this program around. This is a program that is no stranger to making it to the playoffs but they are starving for playoff success. They've lost their last six playoff games and you have to go all the way back to 2002, when they made the Class 5A semifinals to find the last playoff win. This is a young but talented team. The district is brutal but Chickasha expects to be in the mix when October and November roll around.
