Like many other elite prospects, 2025 La Cueva quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='611098' first='Cameron' last='Dyer'] dreams of playing in the NFL someday.

He strongly believes the Arizona State coaching staff led by head coach Kenny Dillingham and wide receivers coach Hines Ward, a former NFL great and Super Bowl MVP who also played quarterback in high school, will get him there.

Not necessarily, though, as a QB. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Dyer will sign with Arizona State in December as a wide receiver. He announced his verbal pledge to the Sun Devils Tuesday night on local Albuquerque TV station KRQE.

“Coach Dillingham and Coach Hines Ward see me as an NFL talent,” Dyer told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I believe they'll provide me with the proper tools necessary to reach my goals. The place also spoke for itself. I loved the environment and the Tempe culture.”

Dyer took an official visit to the ASU campus in Tempe – a suburb of Phoenix – last weekend. He plans to graduate from La Cueva High in December and enroll at Arizona State in time for spring practice.

His visit reinforced his strong relationship with Dillingham, who's just 34 years old but served as the offensive coordinator at Memphis, Auburn, Florida State and Oregon before taking the Arizona State head job prior to the 2023 season.

“My relationship with Coach Dillingham is great,” Dyer said. “He's Face Timed me a couple of times since I committed just to show me how fired up he is and how much he cares about my commitment. I can't wait to play for him.”

Dyer said it was difficult to give up his dream of being a starting quarterback at the major college level, but he happily traded those dreams for a clearer path to the NFL.

“It's one of the hardest things I've had to do, but if that means giving up my dream for reaching my ultimate goal of playing in the NFL, then that's what I'm willing to do,” Dyer said. “I still think I can make it to the NFL at either position. I just have to keep working hard and everything else will follow. The switch to receiver is probably the easier path to accomplishing my dreams.”

Dyer also believes graduating from high school in December and enrolling early at Arizona State was also in his best interests, even though it means he is giving up his senior season in basketball and track for La Cueva. Getting to Tempe in January will allow him to participate in spring practice, giving him a head start to the 2025 season and hopefully boost his chances of early playing time for the Sun Devils.

“Nowadays in college football with the transfer portal and NIL, you never know what can happen,” Dyer said. “In order to protect my future, committing early and graduating early was the best decision for me. It's also a decision that I've been waiting my whole life to make and I honestly feel like I couldn't be more ready to take the next step.”

Dyer is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, 247 Sports and On3.com, the three major national recruiting services.
