One of the top defensive players in the state and in the country highlight the group, along with some athletic quarterbacks who can sling it around and should light up the scoreboards on Friday nights when the season kicks off in late August.
Let’s jump into who we think will be the team MVPs for region III-4A:
A.C. FLORA FALCONS
Roper Wentzky Roper Wentzky 5'11" | 155 lbs | QB AC Flora | 2026 State SC QB, 2026
Wentzky came in as a first-year starter for the Falcons and threw for 2,694 yards and 30 touchdowns in 10 games last year. Now as he approaches his junior season, there is potential for more growth. When you look at his film from 2023, his pocket presence impressed us with his ability to stand in and make throws, especially to the sidelines. He can also buy himself some time and roll out and find the open receiver. You can tell he has good timing with his receivers and he’s comfortable with the Falcons’ system.
CAMDEN BULLDOGS
Jordan Crim Jordan Crim 6'1" | 160 lbs | DB Camden | 2025 State SC DB, 2025
Crim will be one of the leaders for the Bulldogs on defense in 2024. His ability to keep his motor going and make plays is fun to watch. He can flip and turn his hips and pursue the ball carrier at full speed. He garnered All-Region honors for his play last year, while finishing with 92 total tackles, five tackles for loss and five interceptions. And we didn’t even mention that he plays wide receiver on offense as well. He runs his routes with precision and shows off his speed when he gets into the open field. He finished with 10 catches for 206 yards and six touchdowns in 2023.
DREHER BLUE DEVILS
Kaleb Berry Kaleb Berry 6'2" | 180 lbs | WR Dreher | 2026 State SC WR, 2026
If you want a sure handed pass catcher, Berry is your guy. He excels in running routes towards the sideline and keeps his feet in bounds. He can also scramble around when a play breaks down so the quarterback can get him the ball. He has a nice blend of speed to go with it as well once he gets out into the open field.
LANCASTER BRUINS
RJ Brown RJ Brown 5'8" | 195 lbs | QB Lancaster | 2026 State SC QB, 2026
Brown is simply a difference maker when he is in the game. He was used at quarterback, kick returner and defensive back and at all three positions, he excelled at a high level. He shows off his world class speed in the zone read game and once he finds a lane, it’s a house call. The same can be said when he’s back at kick returner. He can run through contact at running back and is hard to bring down once he finds a lane.
RICHLAND NORTHEAST CAVALIERS
Will Wilson Will Wilson 6'1" | 220 lbs | QB Richland Northeast | 2025 State SC QB, 2025
Wilson returns for his senior year as one of the top quarterbacks in the state in 2024. He threw for 2336 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2023. He helped the Cavaliers light up the scoreboard with his precise touch on his throws and ability to lead the receiver into where he can catch it and go get yards after the catch. His ability to scramble and make things happen when things break down or aren’t there coverage wise is fun to watch as well, running for 1527 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. Wilson is currently committed to play for NC State.
SOUTH POINTE STALLIONS
J’Zavien Currence J’Zavien Currence 6'2" | 190 lbs | ATH South Pointe | 2026 State SC ATH, 2026
Currence (pictured above) is a dynamic playmaker and can be used at multiple positions on the field. You will primarily see him at defensive back where he can react quickly to knock the ball away or pick it off. Most of the time it is the latter. The way he is able to run the ally and stop the run is impressive. He is able to diagnose and react to plays quickly and his eyes are always in the right place. It’s why numerous Power 5 schools including Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina are seeking his services. He’ll be a part of another talented secondary for the Stallions this fall that includes Fred Reese Fred Reese 5'10" | 160 lbs | DB South Pointe | 2025 State SC as well.
YORK COUGARS
Johnathan Tobias DB, 2025
Tobias will be an anchor in the Cougar secondary in 2024. His ability to diagnose and react to plays in the air is impressive. He has good closing speed on the ball to break up the pass and can come up and lay a big hit on wide receivers. If you need him to come up in the hole and stop the run on a big third down, he can do that as well. Look for him and Ryan Carter to lead things on defense for York in 2024.
Region III-4A will look a little different in 2024 as York, South Pointe, Lancaster, Dreher will take part in what should be a fun one to watch.
