I wasn’t in on the MVP conversations, but I think the coaches got it right on the nose on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They selected Forest Lake’s Howie Johnson Howie Johnson 6'4" | 250 lbs | DL Forest Lake | 2026 State MN on the defensive line and Maple Grove’s Carson Lund Carson Lund 6'2" | 235 lbs | OL Maple Grove | 2025 State MN on the offensive line. In my opinion, Lund was the most dominant lineman that weekend.
“There was good competition,” Lund said about the afternoon in Plymouth. “It was good that we got to work with some coaches, and then we got a chance to do a little one-on-one competition between the o-line and d-line.”
Lund had some baseline things he wanted to accomplish during the day.
“I was there to get better but also to see the competition. I also wanted to get my name out there for the recruiting process.”
Being available to take a rep – even if out of position – was one of the reasons Lund felt he was singled out as an MVP.
“I just competed,” the Crimson big man said. “I tried to get every rep I could. If no one was stepping in at the right tackle spot – I don’t play right tackle, I play guard – but I would go in and get a rep. (Tackle and guard) is all somewhat relative when you are doing pass pro. I was getting in there, competing, and trying to win every rep.”
Lund plays right guard, and 2023 was his first year starting on varsity. As a senior, he expects to stay at guard and be a situational defensive lineman.
“I am good at getting in open space and getting to the second level,” the junior explained. “I am quick enough to get to the linebackers or the rolled-down safety. I also think I have great movement and can pull. I like pulling a lot – coming around the edge trying to blow people up.”
Lund didn’t take much time off before he started to look towards his senior year.
“I go to a training center twice a week, and we work on agility, but they do a good job of working on blocking skills. I am working on getting my hands in the right spot and chopping my feet to get up-field. I am working on the fundamentals and the little things that help you excel.”
“I throw the shot put and discus,” Lund continued. “I still do the training center workouts twice a week, and we do a team lift before school every day. In the winter, I also played house league basketball. It wasn’t crazy, but we would practice or play twice a week. (Basketball) kept me going; I enjoy playing basketball.”
As shown a couple of weeks ago, he also enjoys controlling the line of scrimmage – something he did better than most during the Prepredzone Minnesota Showcase.
