Continue ReadingThe circuit of back-to-back-to-back weekends on the road has come to a conclusion, as I was fortunate to attend Coach Nick Pennisi’s PSR BIG Camp Series on Saturday, May 11. This marks the second year in a row that I covered the event. Pennisi has grown his significantly from last year. With over 400 prospects registered for the event, I had my work cut out for me to identify and scout some of the event’s standouts. As I feverishly wrote notes, here are my scouting notes from the position group disclosed in this article’s title.
PSR BIG Camp Series Event Coverage
Scout’s Notebook: Quarterbacks
Jersey Juice’s 1st-Team All Camp quarterback
Reilly Hoffacker

attempted to double-down on his performance form the prior week. The Timber Creek prospect had, what I would describe, as a somewhat wonky motion; however, he appears to make it work for him. Hoffacker threw an accurate ball in mostly good places for his receivers. For as big as he is, I want to see Hoffacker get into his throws with his lower half a bit more to generate more power….. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Sayreville’s
Nick Nunez

has a throwing motion that is directly over the top. Nunez’s ball went arrant on at least one throw that I saw. To avoid this I would coach Nunez up to follow through on his throwing motion and ensure that his feet are both on the ground, planted, and transfer his weight when delivering a strike.
Red Bank Catholic has a 2025 quarterback who is sure to make solid decisions should anything happen to incumbent quarterback
Frankie Williams

is very patient with the ball. In the face of tight coverage Williams was reluctant to force something into air-tight defense. Showing that he is a solid teammate and “gets” what camps are about, Williams did eventually throw the ball up for grabs, allowing his target and the defender to showcase something to college coaches in attendance. Under normal circumstances though, I would not expect Williams to toss that ball up….. In recent weeks I got the pleasure of scouting out Ocean City’s linemen, but today I finally got to see a skill.
Walker Bailey

, their 2025 quarterback, showed some good moxie and abilities at the PSR BIG Camp Series. Bailey has the right idea on his throws, leading his receivers very well. Most of the balls were within their catch radius and typically either ahead of his target if the defense was in trail technique or north/south if they were over the top. Although his timing was just a bit off at times with his targets, this is expected at camps where there is no expectation of prior rapport with his targets.
Although you cannot miss him because of how quarterback-ly he appears, Somerville’s
Brenden Pacheco

is a prospect I actually did not get many looks at in-person. The little bit that I did witness, however, is that Pacheco has an extremely strong (distance) and powerful (velocity) arm. He had a lot of faith in whatever receiver he was paired with, especially on vertical routes, laying the ball out and relying on them to make a great play on it. Pacheco also threw absolute bee-bees to the outside on the out route. He anticipated his receiver’s break extremely well and delivered the ball well before they turned their head to look for it….. Although he completed last year at St. Joseph’s Regional, Kyle Mercorelli took his talents elsewhere as he appears to be new Hudson Catholic head coach Lamar McKnight’s quarterback for the next few seasons. Mercorelli showed natural arm strength and solid discernment when to throw the ball, two good key indicators that bode well for his future. Mercorelli did, however, open up his shoulders a bit too early when getting the ball out. As the speed of the game and talent upticks on the varsity level, speeding this part of his release up will aid him to counteract such factors.
