The circuit of back-to-back-to-back weekends on the road has come to a conclusion, as I was fortunate to attend Coach Nick Pennisi's PSR BIG Camp Series on Saturday, May 11. This marks the second year in a row that I covered the event. Pennisi has grown his significantly from last year. With over 400 prospects registered for the event, I had my work cut out for me to identify and scout some of the event's standouts. As I feverishly wrote notes, here are my scouting notes from the position group disclosed in this article's title.

Scout's Notebook: Defensive Backs

Leading off are three defensive back prospects from the Super Football Conference's parochial schools. [player_tooltip player_id='606245' first='Willie' last='Stewart Jr'] of St. Joseph's Regional, was likely one of the most refined and noteworthy defensive back prospects in attendance. Stewart adjusted to the ball extremely well as it was in midair. While defending routes, Steward ever-so-subtly "presses" receivers with is body. This enables him to gently judge and bump receivers, giving him an advantage by feeling what his matchup's next move is. This allowed him to win so many reps on the afternoon..... Another "junior," [player_tooltip player_id='1277091' first='Christopher' last='Newman'], Jr. from DePaul to be exact, was another defensive back who had a strong day. At every cut, break, jump, or release Newman consistently found himself in good position to defend. Newman's hips and leverage always seemed to be correct, he was balanced and backpedaled well, and broke on the ball in reasonable fashion to make a play on it..... Delbarton is home to the last of this trio, were [player_tooltip player_id='1277096' first='Lucas' last='Cardinale'] plays. Standing at 6'2" Cardinale profiles a bit more as a safety. This was reinforced as he took snaps too, typically lining up over receivers in the slot or against tight ends. I understand that this was a camp setting and reads were 100% pass, however, I noticed that Cardinale had a tendency to creep forward on the snap of the ball. Without saying, I am confident that his coaches emphasize that he remain "late to the run and early to the pass." More or less just something for Cardinale to keep in mind once camp starts.

[player_tooltip player_id='787199' first='Justin' last='Silva'] is the first of a trio of public school products for today's report. Silva demonstrated good feet from his position in the secondary. He was able to backpedal low and quickly, run stride-for-stride with most matchups, and change leverages fairly well..... Coming up from Moorestown was [player_tooltip player_id='1277093' first='Anthony' last='Yates']. One play that I noted where Yates shined was covering a post-flag on a double-move. Yates was not faked out as he keyed in on the hips of his assignment rather than upper-body fakes. In doing so, Yates enabled his hips to swing around in time and get underneath the route, tipping it for a harmless incompletion..... If Shabazz is destined to dethrone Weequahic as Newark's team to beat, [player_tooltip player_id='1277099' first='Sahaaj' last='Benett'] figures to be a part of it. Like Yates, Benett was not juked out despite receivers' best attempt to do so. In the process, Benett maintained great coverage, balance, and allowed zero-if-any separation. However, one thing I want to see Benett clean up is his tendency to hop. As receivers get a release when he plays off, rather than backpedal I noticed Benett hop a bit. This might get him caught in mid air or flatfooted at times.
