Calvary Baptist climbed back to state championship heights this past season for the first time since 2020.

And the Cavaliers have every intention of staying there with a still-strong roster, including high-profile college prospects, that should be the favorite to repeat in Division-III Select.

Calvary Baptist is among the first stops of Prep Redzone Louisiana's series of "Offseason 3-2-1" spotlights looking at three key returning standouts, two notable breakout candidates and one underclassman to know sooner than later.

3 WELL-KNOWN RETURNERS

[player_tooltip player_id='710075' first='Devin' last='Harper'] — 6-5-296 OL — Calvary Baptist (2025)

One of the Cavaliers' most well-known players this season from a statewide — and, for that matter, nationwide — standpoint is actually a new face on the roster. The highly recruited offensive lineman transferred from nearby Captain Shreve this winter shortly before announcing his commitment to LSU over a long list of other college options. For all Calvary Baptist's on-field success this past year and for the past decade-plus, Harper immediately becomes the program's highest-profile lineman — a prototypical big-bodied blocker with a motor and a nasty streak to his game.

[player_tooltip player_id='710073' first='James' last='Simon'] — 6-0, 200 RB — Calvary Baptist (2025)

One of the faces of Louisiana's loaded 2025 running back class is back for a senior follow-up to an exceptional junior campaign that including all-state selections and title game Outstanding Player honors. Simon rushed for 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns this past fall, including nearly 200 yards and three scores in the title game, and added another 848 yards and nine touchdowns as a pass-catcher. He is scheduled to announce a college decision this month between Texas, Notre Dame, LSU, Alabama and Texas A&M.

[player_tooltip player_id='144901' first='Abram' last='Wardell'] — 6-0, 190 QB — Calvary Baptist (2025)

Arguably — if even arguably — the state's most decorated returning quarterback will lead the Cavaliers' title defense, fresh off his Class 2A Outstanding Offensive Player honors with a school-record 3,883 yards and 45 touchdowns on surgical efficiency with 266-for-340 (78%) passing and just two interceptions. Wardell understands the game, reads defense and takes care of the football as well as or better than any quarterback in the state without shying away from taking well-timed and well-thrown shots and trusting his playmakers.

2 BREAKOUT CANDIDATES

[player_tooltip player_id='934564' first='Braylun' last='Huglon'] — 5-10, 175 DB/ATH — Calvary Baptist (2027)

"Breakout candidates" might not be the most fitting phrasing here for a few more notable Cavaliers who need to be mentioned. But Huglon will go from the wunderkind freshman in a veteran secondary to — along with rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='144896' first='Julius' last='Moss'], a UAB commit — one of the most-experienced returning leaders as a sophomore, with an all-district and all-state caliber season already under his belt. And, also an explosive receiving threat, don't be surprised to potentially see him involved on offense at some point with more opportunities available following the graduation of a strong 2024 class.

[player_tooltip player_id='291081' first='Kolby' last='Thomas'] — 5-10, 160 WR — Calvary Baptist (2025)

and [player_tooltip player_id='144900' first='Kaleb' last='Tucker'] — 6-2, 185 WR — Calvary Baptist (2025)

The two rising seniors lead the still-talented receiving corps following those aforementioned 2024 graduations from the group. The speedy, crafty and sure-handed Thomas was very much in the mix as a junior with 70 catches for 817 yards and 11 scores, all the way to the game-winning touchdown catch in the title game. And Tucker, returning to his former teammates after playing the past three years at Huntington, brings a tall target, but with good speed and attention to his route-running to be another versatile — and, though "new" to the team, familiar — weapon for Wardell.

1 UNDERCLASSMAN TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='1372211' first='Ty' last='Walsworth'] — ATH — Calvary Baptist (2028)

One of the top rising freshman athletes in the Shreveport area joins the varsity roster as a young safety and receiver who could also be in play as a potential quarterback of the future. Walsworth has been a multisport standout in youth football, baseball and basketball — already dunking with his impressive leap — and is among the next up-and-coming Cavaliers to know in the future.
