The crop of wide receiver talent in the state of South Carolina performed at a high level in 2023, and we expect that to continue in 2024.

Some names will have an opportunity to hear their names called on Saturdays. All of them bring a unique blend of speed, power and strength to the table that is hard for defenses to keep their eye on and try to key on.

BREAKING DOWN THE TOP FIVE

[player_tooltip player_id='1012834' first='Malik' last='Clark'] | Rock Hill

The more and more we watch Clark, the more impressed we are with how much of a technician he has become at the position. His route running is precise and he runs his routes at full speed. He can find the open hole in the coverages and make people miss in space. He has great hands and makes things look simple. It's why he was named MVP of the Carolinas Coaches Combine in York two weeks ago.

[player_tooltip player_id='272701' first='John' last='Simmons'] | Myrtle Beach

When you turn on the tape of Simmons, the first thing that jumps out is his ability to beat one-on-one man coverage. Once he is stacked against the defensive back, it normally doesn't end well for the opposition. He's that good. He fits the outside receiver position well – he has good size and a good burst of speed once he gets into the open field.

[player_tooltip player_id='1012637' first='Jackson' last='Repp'] | Christ Church

Repp's shiftiness in space is fun to watch. Repp (pictured above) can make defenders miss, even when you think you have him wrapped up for a short gain. He makes good north and south progress once he's out into the open field. And good luck trying to play man coverage against him, because he'll just run right by you. He's an excellent route runner and knows where to find the green grass. He had 63 receptions, 1510 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2023. He recently picked up offers from Boston College and Dartmouth.

[player_tooltip player_id='464880' first='Stephen' last='Collier'] | River Bluff

What impresses us the most about watching Collier's film is his ability to run a variety of different routes. Whether it's over the middle, out of the backfield or on a deep vertical route, Collier's versatility cannot be understated. He finds a way to get open no matter where you put him. We even saw him on a run play and he found a way to get up field for yardage quickly. He's another one that has great size and power for the position. He had 46 catches, 526 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2023.

[player_tooltip player_id='464881' first='Jayden' last='Sellers'] | South Florence

The No. 1 player in the 2025 wide receiver class had a big impact on the Bruins in 2023, and he'll be the focal point as we head into 2024. He has world class speed to run away from defenders, while doing an excellent job of blocking down field for his teammates. He's tough to bring down when you get him corralled. And as we saw on film – he broke numerous tackles. He puts his foot in the ground and the athleticism takes over.

TEN RISING STARS

[player_tooltip player_id='1249764' first='Jordan' last='Collins'] | South Pointe

With numerous Division 1 offers from schools including Buffalo and Miami (OH), we expect Collins to have a huge 2024 season. He caught our eye during the Carolinas Coaches Combine at York two weeks ago with his performance during the combine portion. Looking at his film, he can line up on the outside and catch the ball at its highest point, looking the ball into his hands. We saw on film where he lined up like an h-back and looked impressive catching it out of the backfield.

[player_tooltip player_id='1012718' first='TyDarion' last='Grier'] | Fairfield Central

Grier is special to watch when he gets in the open field. He has the speed and the vision to make a 10-yard pass reception into a touchdown. He's another guy who can make plays from the backfield and can make people miss in the process. He does a good job of blocking down field.

[player_tooltip player_id='1012616' first='Mikkel' last='Skinner'] | Riverside

Skinner will line up in the slot at receiver and sometimes at running back from what we saw on film. He's another receiver that is impressive because of the versatility he brings to the position. He's tough to bring down and if he finds one hole in the coverage, it's likely a house call. He made some impressive catches, beating one-on-one coverage with defenders draped all over him.

[player_tooltip player_id='1254034' first='Romaine' last='Grant'] | Baptist Hill

Grant made his way into the rankings this cycle and when you turn on the film, it's easy to see why. He is a home run hitter every time he catches the ball and can outrun defenders. He can go up and catch the ball at its highest point as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1254087' first='Josh' last='Goodwin'] | Laurens

Goodwin does a great job of keeping the offense on schedule, especially in the quick passing game with throws out into the flat and on screens. When he finds some green grass, he can pick up an easy first down for the offense.

[player_tooltip player_id='1254100' first='J'Vaariez' last='Sumpter'] | Berkeley

Sumpter has a great burst of speed once he's able to get into the open field. He excels in the quick passing game and he can make people miss in space. He's also impactful on special teams, as he took two kickoffs back to the house for six points on film.

[player_tooltip player_id='1254122' first='Jamarcus' last='Smith'] | Gaffney

Not only does Smith have the ability to turn on the jets, but he is a precise route runner who knows how to get open, whether it's man or zone. He snatches the ball out of the air and can run a variety of routes, whether it's a deep post, slant, screen or go route.

[player_tooltip player_id='1254128' first='Jaquavis' last='Clark'] | Chesterfield

What impressed us right away about watching Clark's tape is his ability to create separation from defenders and win his one-on-one matchups. He's one of those receivers who can go up and catch the ball at its highest point, like we saw on several jump balls for touchdowns. He can make plays when lining up in the backfield as well, showing his versatility.

[player_tooltip player_id='1013040' first='Connor' last='Brown'] | North Augusta

Brown is quick and shifty from his slot position. He can take a quick slant and turn it into a 15-yard pickup in a flash, being able to outrun defenders in the process. He's also another guy who can go up and get the ball at its highest point and is not afraid of a little bit of contact. He has great hands to be able to look the ball in and make solid north/south progress.

[player_tooltip player_id='1013062' first='Keshawn' last='Johnson'] | West Florence

Johnson is an excellent route runner who can make things happen after the catch. With lightning quick speed, he can outrun defenders on his way to the end zone. But the Knights also find ways to involve him in the running game as well on jet sweeps and as a running back some to keep the offense on schedule.

FIVE DARK HORSE CANDIDATES

[player_tooltip player_id='464895' first='Brandon' last='Cromer'] | Lexington

Cromer plays on the outside and can run a variety of routes, whether it's over the middle or on comeback routes. He has the speed to go along with it as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1158021' first='Kevin' last='Boone'] | Berkeley

Boone's height is what jumps out to you when you turn on the tape. He can get up field quickly and he's able to go up and make catches on the jump ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='1013061' first='Cameron' last='Cobb'] | Blacksburg

Cobb is a fun guy to watch on the outside – another guy who can go up and make contested catches. Also is quick once he gets into the open field.

[player_tooltip player_id='1012863' first='Jeremie' last='Richardson'] | Crestwood

Richardson is a guy who goes and gets yards after the catch – no dancing in space, just a great north and south runner who should have a huge impact in 2024.

[player_tooltip player_id='1249825' first='Keyshun' last='Henderson'] | JL Mann

Henderson will be counted on as a leader – he's well positioned to do so with his ability to catch the ball and get up field quickly, like we saw on screens. He's a big time deep threat.

LOOKING AHEAD

When you look at this 2025 class, this could be a special one and one that we look back on. And there's so much speed to go along with the production that we all saw in 2023. It should be a fun ride to watch everyone fly around and make plays in 2024.

The crop of wide receiver talent in the state of South Carolina performed at a high level in 2023, and we expect that to continue in 2024.
