Previously, we’ve listed the candidates for the award, most recently the Top 10 contenders. Our three finalists led their teams to state championships in Classes 6A, 5A and 4A, unsurprising considering we’ve said the award is given to an individual based prominently on team success.
With that being said, here are the 3 finalists for the 2023 New Mexico Heisman Award (listed in alphabetical order):
Cameron Dyer Cameron Dyer 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB La Cueva | 2025 State NM , La Cueva: When La Cueva was 0-3 in early September, few folks gave the Bears much of a chance to win the 6A title. But La Cueva ripped off 10 straight wins, including the 35-14 victory over Cleveland in the state championship game. Dyer, a junior, was sensational in the post-season, completing 36-of-53 passes for 632 yards and 3 TD in the victories over Farmington, Las Cruces and Cleveland. Dyer did the majority of his damage in the playoffs with his feet, rushing for 561 yards and EIGHT touchdowns on 38 carries, an average of 14.76 yards per attempt. In the final two games, he had scoring runs of 72, 85 and 88 yards. Both of his long scoring runs against Cleveland came in the game-changing second quarter.
Nye Estrada Nye Estrada 5'10" | 170 lbs | QB Artesia | 2024 State NM , Artesia: After leading Artesia to consecutive Class 5A championships, Estrada has officially earned legendary status in high school-football crazy Artesia, where the fans are accustomed to success with 32 state championships. Estrada threw for about 6,000 yards in his two years at the QB helm. He passed for 295 yards and 5 TD (all 25+ yards) in the state championship game against Roswell, including a 91-yarder late in the second quarter for a key 21-7 halftime lead just when it appeared it would be a one-score game at intermission. With Estrada playing one of his best games of the season, Artesia produced 35 points against a Roswell defense that had surrendered just 84 points all season.
Wyatt Gomez Wyatt Gomez 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Lovington | 2024 State NM , Lovington: In his one year leading the Class 4A champion Lovington offense, Gomez led the state in passing with 3,676 yards and 51 TD. Only two other quarterbacks had as many as 40 TD passes ( Elijah Melancon Elijah Melancon 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Eunice | 2026 State NM of Eunice; Dillon Salazar of Tularosa), none who played at the 3A level or higher. In short, Gomez dominated defenses all season long, throwing for 300+ yards five times. Here’s the most impressive statistic: In three playoff games, Gomez completed 62-of-76 passes (81.6 percent) for 856 yards and 15 TD with just one interception. Yes, Gomez had more TD passes (15) than incompletions (14) in the postseason, an amazing accomplishment. In the final two games against Silver (45-26 win in semifinals) and Portales (57-21 win in title game), Gomez was 52-of-60 passing (86.7 completion pct.) for 686 yards and 11 TD with ZERO interceptions. As good of a senior season as Gomez enjoyed, he saved his best for last.
