Running Backs
Starting with the MVP from the running back group, Somerville’s Terrell Mitchell Terrell Mitchell 5'8" | 185 lbs | RB Somerville | 2025 State NJ showcased his superior athleticism amongst those within his position group. He looked the fastest, moved the quickest, and had real strong-looking legs. What impressed me about Mitchell was that every cut he made was violent. I do not recall him dropping a pass and he tracked the ball well deep down the field…… Luke Gialanella Luke Gialanella 5'7" | 160 lbs | RB Pope John | 2027 State NJ was a back that stood out to me; however, after I wrote bib #51 down and cross-checked the roster, I was floored to find out the back out of Pope John was just a current freshman. Gialanella looked very comfortable as a one-cut-and-go upfield type of runner. He also showed me that he changed direction very well and played with good pad level.
Wide Receivers
Akin to his Pioneer teammate Terrell Mitchell Terrell Mitchell 5'8" | 185 lbs | RB Somerville | 2025 State NJ , Joshua Rodriguez took home MVP honors at wide receiver. Rodriguez possesses a plus release and high-pointed the ball any time it was above his head. He also seems to be well coached to catch the ball with his hands, as I never witnessed him pin the ball against his body. He runs relatively crisp routes that created separation against some of the showcase’s lesser defenders. Lastly, Rodriguez is willing to give his body up, laying out for the ball, in order to make the play…… Gavin Gatchalian Gavin Gatchalian 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Farmingdale | 2025 State NY – who I have officially renamed “Catchalian” – was a clear-cut standout amongst the receivers as well. Gatchalian was a great route runner. He got open quickly at the line, but his speed was on full display when he ran deep. The deeper the route, the more open he got. Gatchalian also showed a keen sense of field awareness – particularly as he approaches the boundary…… Hailing from New Dorp, Staten Island Zymiere Shaw Zymiere Shaw 6'0" | 165 lbs | WR New Dorp | 2024 State NY was also a receiver prospect who caught my attention. More so than any other prospect I witnessed, Shaw was especially adept at double-move routes. His sudden movement atop the first route as he broke into the second left defenders in a blender. Shaw also had some fight to him – fighting for each and every ball that was contested. More times than not he prevailed victorious.
