This year, players came from a record 8 counties – Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Gaston, Cleveland, Lincoln, Iredell, and Stanly counties. The West Team ended up winning this year’s edition of the game 21-14 for a 3-2 all-time series lead. There were impressive players on the West team that we want to highlight in the last game of their high school careers.
AJ Jenkins – Harding – Defensive Back – Defensive MVP
AJ played both cornerback and safety for the West Team and had 2 major interceptions at critical parts of the game. His first interception helped take momentum early in the game and set up the West Team’s first touchdown. His second interception came in the 4th quarter as the East was driving down the field to potentially take the lead, and it was an incredible play as AJ jumped high in the air to snag the ball at its highest point. AJ recently committed to Dodge City Community College, and they are getting a special talent.
Reggie Daniel – Mountain Island – Wide Receiver
Reggie led the West Team in receptions with 6 in total and had a big catch against single coverage that put the West Team deep into East Team territory in the first quarter. Reggie has a great physical frame and has several offers on the table he is considering to play football at the next level. He has not committed to a school at this time.
Trenton Sherrill – East Gaston – Quarterback
After AJ’s first interception, the West immediately went with a hitch-and-go deep ball, which was beautifully executed by Trenton and Mooresville Wide Receiver Randy Fulmore for the first touchdown of the bowl game. Trenton was the leading passer for the West Team for the game and showed some good escapability from the pocket against a strong East Team defense. Trenton has not committed to a school to play for at the next level at this time.
Julian Carmichael – West Charlotte – Linebacker
Julian had what ended up being the game-winning play of the game in the 4th quarter. He had a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave the West Team the final margin of victory at 21-14. Julian was also impressive in helping slow down the run game of the East Team throughout the game. Julian has had a good bit of recruiting attention from several schools, but he has not committed to play for a school at this time.
A’Jay Davis – Palisades – Defensive Line
A’Jay had a nice game coming off the edge for the West Team at Defensive End. He had a game-changing play as the East Team was driving for a touchdown, getting a great pass rush and causing a sack/fumble, which was picked up and returned by Chris Heartley from Berry for a touchdown. A’Jay currently holds a couple offers from different schools, but has not committed to play for a school at this time.
