November Madness: Friday First Round Playoff Scores, Sights and Sounds
The first round of the 2023 New Mexico High School Football Playoffs got underway Friday night with 14 games at locations throughout the state. Here’s the scoreboard for each classification:

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS (West Mesa at Rio Rancho)
No. 5 Rio Rancho defeated No. 12 West Mesa, 35-21, in a hard-fought contest Friday night at Rams Stadium. The No. 12 Mustangs gave the No. 5 Rams all they wanted and more for 48 minutes. In fact, West Mesa led, 14-7, in the second quarter before Rio Rancho scored a pair of touchdowns, including one with 5.3 seconds left before halftime, to take a 21-14 lead into the locker rooms. Rayce Ramirez Rayce Ramirez 5'10" | 170 lbs | RB Rio Rancho | 2024 State NM ‘s 13-yard TD run midway throughthe third quarter gave the Rams a 28-14 lead. They added another TD late in the fourth quarter after stopping West Mesa on downs. However, the Mustangs didn’t quit. They scored quickly on a long TD pass to make it 35-21. The Mustangs recovered the onsides kick and threw a TD pass into the end zone in the final seconds. However the scoring play was negated by a illegal man downfield penalty, keeping the deficit at two touchdowns. Rio Rancho faces No. 4 seed Sandia in the quarterfinals next Friday night at Milne Stadium in Albuquerque.
