RICHBURG | [player_tooltip player_id='809751' first='Ian' last='Grissom'] made playing quarterback for Class A top-ranked Lewisville look easy Thursday night at home.

The senior threw five touchdown passes in the 74-0 rout over Whitmire.

Grissom was aided by his wide receivers who turned short catches into scores on four of his five touchdowns. The longest scoring pass was a 33-yard touchdown to [player_tooltip player_id='589011' first='Dion' last='Brown'], the team's lone Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl selection.

De'adrian Robinson led the wide receiving corps with three touchdowns.

“I give it to my guys,” Grissom said. “It's basically what we've been preaching all week is letting our athletes go make plays and that's kind of what we did tonight. We just kind of gave them the ball quick and they went and made plays and it showed on the scoreboard.”

“We showed tonight that we can beat you from the perimeter or we can stretch the field,” Lewisville head coach Leon Boulware said. “A lot of teams think the only thing Ian can do is throw it down the field. We showed tonight that we can put it in the window as well. Ian's a quarterback that can make pretty much any throw we need him to make and then when you have skilled guys on the edge like we have on the perimeter, you give them an inch, they're going to make it. They're going to take it.”

The Lions also benefited from a formidable offensive line that, when not protecting Grissom, opened holes for the running backs. Mikel Hutchins rushed for three touchdowns and Damion Fee had two in the first half, often following the blocking of Cade Foster, Tyrell Heath, Ethan Shipman, [player_tooltip player_id='1639696' first='Malik' last='Harrison'] and Trey Smith.

“You've got a good, o-line you've really got everything,” Smith said. “And as good as players as we have, it's kind of hard to explain. It's really good.”

Said Fee: “Those five upfront, without them, we wouldn't even have a team. Those five up front are important. I love them. I love those five. They help our team and make our team better.”

Boulware says the same about the defensive line. Starters Montre' Fletcher, KJ Davis, [player_tooltip player_id='1158047' first='Elisha' last='Baker'] and Natarius McCullough along with Caden Foster (pictured, with teammate [player_tooltip player_id='1639690' first='Eden' last='Gaston']) shut down Whitmire's running game. The Wolverines managed only one first down off a roughing the passer penalty.

Lewisville's deep linebacking corps with JaQuintus Cousar, who also rushed for a touchdown, Daquan Evans, [player_tooltip player_id='1142605' first='Joaquan' last='Howze'] and Tymon Hughes also helped defend the run and pressured Whitmire quarterback Blake Stribble into two turnovers.

[player_tooltip player_id='1165159' first='Jordan' last='Strong'] had an interception and defensive back Adrian Walkup recovered a fumble which led to one of Hutchins' three touchdown runs.

“We rotate between four guys and all four of them can play football,” Boulware said. “They do a good job of reading and reacting.”

The play of the defense spoiled Whitmire head coach Andrew Campbell's plan of making it a “boring” game. With four starters out, including two offensive lineman, Campbell found himself starting youth against a senior-laden Lewisville team.

The revamped offensive line included freshmen Sam Moore and Gabe Martin, sophomores Jaden Clark, Ty Sligh and tight end Masyn Busby and seniors Dierrius Dawkins and Zayne Gibson.

“The scoreboard didn't show it, but I thought they fought like hell,” Campbell said. “They don't ever quit on me.”
