Continue ReadingThe tight end position in high school has a tendency to be hit-and-miss when it comes to having a player who is truly balanced as a blocker and receiver.
Oftentimes, the position is filled by a player who is either a solid additional blocker or a primarily receiving athlete. One of the position groups that Colorado has produced top-tier prospects for is the balanced tight end who can do both.
This article will briefly examine five senior tight ends who should be on college radars and deserve to be offered while they are still available.
Dawson Johnson Dawson Johnson 6'4" | 225 lbs | TE Cherry Creek | 2024 State CO | Cherry Creek | 6’4”, 220lbs
Johnson is a next-level tight end with one of the higher ceilings in the state. His blocking success comes from his quick feet, explosive strikes, and dominating power, but his competitive playing style helps to set him apart from the rest. He is an outstanding competitor who shows a lot of toughness when engaging in blocks, running routes through the middle of the box, and making catches in traffic. Johnson is a skilled receiver whose size makes his athleticism all the more impressive. He has the physicality to run through defenders once the ball is in his hands and a powerful stride that comes with breakaway speed. Johnson holds offers from Northern Colorado, Portland State, CSU-Pueblo, and Lindenwood, making him a prospect on the rise.
Brody Judd Brody Judd 6'4" | 215 lbs | TE Broomfield | 2024 State CO | Broomfield | 6’4”, 215lbs
Judd is an athlete who possesses the ideal characteristics of a balanced tight end. He is an effective blocker who adds strength and power to the offensive line, which has helped him contribute to his team’s ground game. Judd converted to tight end from wide receiver heading into last year’s championship-winning season, where he developed his talents in the passing game. His size, speed, and athleticism make him a viable receiving target who can also line up in a two-point. Judd has offers from Adams State, Sioux Falls, and Fort Lewis while garnering serious attention from a couple of D1 programs.
Logan Ryan | Eaglecrest | 6’5”, 215lbs
Ryan is a must-know tight end who has the potential to emerge as one of the biggest sleepers in the state. He is a receiving tight end whose size and athleticism make him a mismatch for secondaries. His skills as a receiver and ball carrier make him a player that offensive play-callers scheme up ways to get the ball. Ryan’s playmaking abilities give him the potential to be a young recruit who will see early playing time and emerge as a legitimate difference-maker at the next level, placing him in the category of must-know prospects.
Ben Early Ben Early 6'4" | 200 lbs | TE Banning Lewis Prep Academy | 2024 State CO | Banning Lewis Academy | 6’4”, 205lbs
Early is another underrated sleeper prospect with a significantly high ceiling. He is a talented receiver with athleticism that has enabled him to be a consistent standout in multiple sports. His versatile skillset gives him the ability to line up as a receiver and cause problems for the secondary or attach to the offensive line in a three-point stance and barrel through defenders as an extra run blocker. Early is an offensive weapon who playmaking abilities solidifies him as a member of the “best 11” who should always be on the field, making him a must-add prospect to every college radar that scouts this area.
Jake Scobey Jake Scobey 6'3" | 210 lbs | TE Thomas Jefferson | 2024 CO | Thomas Jefferson | 6’3”, 210lbs
Scobey is another well-balanced tight end whose skill set makes him a difference-maker as a blocker and a receiver. He is a strong athlete who can set the edge as a blocker, pick up the block at the next level, and then use his impressive speed to get into the secondary to maul defensive backs. His abilities as a pass-catcher make him a legitimate receiving threat whose athleticism turns him into a mismatch for linebackers while his size gives him an advantage over defensive backs. Scobey has an offer from Drake University and is on a couple of FBS radars, making him a player to offer while he is still available.
