Here’s a look at five running backs out of Virginia in the 2028 class that look destined for big things. Some of these eighth-grade backs are already torching the JV level, so Imagine what the next four years will be like. Scary! Check it out:
There is some serious up-and-coming talent at Hugenot High School and Bowling IV is one of the faces at the forefront. With big arm of fellow 2028 prospect Charles Scott Jr. Charles Scott Jr. 6’4″ | 210 lbs | QB Huguenot | 2028 at the helm, Bowling IV is the partner in crime from the running back position. Together, the eighth-grade duo has absolutely shredded the JV level this year and are 9-0 as of this write up. Speaking particularly on Bowling IV, the 5-foot-6, 150-pounder is a jitterbug bug that can make ya miss in a phone booth. His moves, combined with speed and vision, make him a very difficult ball-carrier to get a hand on, let alone bring down.
5’9 145lb Bryson Grinder Bryson Grinder 5’9″ | 145 lbs | RB VA is coming off a Natty season in 2022 and has his eyes on checking off more boxes before Varsity play. Bryson really shines on the outside and displays really good contact balance. A sweep to the right can result in a long run on the left side of the field–just check out his film from Northside. His pressure step I quick, and he has good vision to cut back against the grain for hidden yardage. He also finishes runs well.
757’s finest Trevion Holmes Trevion Holmes 5’9″ | 165 lbs | RB VA comes in at 5’9 165 pounds. He is an outstanding zone runner and runs with good patience inside the tackles. Owns the ability to make linebackers miss in the hole and keeps his legs moving on contact. I really like the change of pace before and after his moves to get his pads back parallel to the line of scrimmage for big gains. Also has the speed to make it a foot race once he breaks into the secondary.
You can have all the ability in the world but it means nothing without the “want to”. Sylar Pena Sylar Pena 5’7″ | 160 lbs | RB Gainesville | 2028 has the “want to” and he plays with a different passion and intensity then most. His stocky 5’7 160 pound frame reminds me of a younger Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Sylar runs the rock with a tempo that means business. He’s fast, physical, and strong. The production is undeniable as Sylar averages over 150 yards and 2 touchdowns a game.
Marquece Sharpe Jr. Marquece Sharpe Jr. 6’0″ | 185 lbs | RB Woodbridge | 2028 VA is already 5’11 and 185 pounds. He’s currently playing JV and has the physical maturity to cause problems next year as well. Being one of the bigger kids at the youth level comes with assumptions. Well Mr. Sharpe is a skilled running back that looks intimidating. However, the intimidation factor intensifies more due to the downhill physical running style, footwork, blocking, and receiving talent out the backfield. This prospect really has the tangibles to be something special when his high school career comes to an end.
