Three of my original games had to be swapped out because I could not find stats for those teams on public sites.
Here is the fourth of multiple reports this week picking five key games from a different classification each day and featuring one prospect from each game.
The Class 3A bracket is heavy with winning clubs on the chalk line, but don’t be shocked if there are a couple of possible upsets. On paper, the Class 3A tournament appears to be the most competitive of the four I have previewed.
Iola (4-4) at Parsons (7-1) – Parsons is having an under-appreciated season because with other Class 3A programs Cheney, Andale, and Hayden gobbling up headlines. Parson’s only loss of the season came against Southeast Kansas opponent Frontenac. Iola and Parsons have already met this season with the Vikings winning that contest 21-12.
Jamarion Washington, RB, 6’1” 215, Parson, ‘24
Washington is having one of the best seasons for Class 3A running backs. He has carried the ball 156 times for the Vikings and has scored 16 touchdowns. Washington has a nice combination of speed and strength. He can either break ankles with his speed or push people off them with a stiff arm.
Perry Lecompton (2-6) at Wellsville (8-0) – Wellsville is one of three remaining unbeaten teams in Class 3A and they have one of the state’s top quarterbacks running the offense. The Kaws are not as competitive as they have been in the past, but they have the pedigree to pull off a possible upset.
William Dorsey, QB, 6’2”, 168, Wellsville, ‘24
Dorsey is one of the most accurate passers in Kansas. He has a 76 completion percentage and has thrown for 2,157 yards and 32 touchdowns in eight games. The winner of this game will play the winner of Holton (4-4) and Bishop Ward (3-5) in the regional round.
Royal Valley (3-5) @ Santa Fe Trail (6-2) – The winner of this game should get a shot at undefeated Hayden (8-0) as long as the Wildcats are able to fend off Baldwin in the classic Wildcat/Bulldog battle.
Luke Edwards Luke Edwards 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Santa Fe Trail | 2024 State KS , QB, 6’0”, 165, Santa Fe Trail, ‘24
Edwards is posting impressive numbers for the Chargers this season and is a quality baseball player to boot. The senior signal-caller has thrown for 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is also a threat on the ground rushing for eight scores and 208 yards.
Colby (4-4) @ Cheney (8-0) – Cheney made national headlines already this season by ending the country’s longest winning streak belonging to Andale. The Cardinals won’t be satisfied unless they take home the 3A state trophy with them from Hutchinson in late November.
Casen Carroll Casen Carroll 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Colby | 2025 State KS , QB, 6’2”, 170, Colby, ‘25
Colby is led by a junior quarterback. Carroll has thrown for 1,152 yards and 13 touchdowns for the 4-4 Eagles. One team starting with a C already had the upset of the regular season, maybe Colby can pull off the next one.
Concordia (2-6) @ Wichita Collegiate (7-1) – If you can’t travel to Wellsville to see their quarterback play, then take a trip to Wichita and watch Collegiate’s passer. The winner of this game will meet the winner of Rock Creek (5-3) and Chapman (3-5).
Hudson Ferralez Hudson Ferralez 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Wichita Collegiate | 2024 State KS , QB, 6’1”, 205, Wichita Collegiate, ‘24
Battling Dorsey for top QB honors is Ferralez. He is coming off a week eight game where he threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Ferralez has thrown for 51 career touchdowns and has yet to pick a college to play for. He will look to make a deep run in the Class 3A playoffs.
