The Class 6A-Region 6 Title was on the line Friday evening between host Brentwood and their cross-town rival Ravenwood in what many felt would be a close game going into this matchup, it turned out to be a defensive shutdown victory for the home Bruins.
Brentwood went on to defeat Ravenwood 17-0 behind a stout Bruins defense and a ball controlled offense that scored touchdowns through the air but it was Trey Dorris Trey Dorris 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Brentwood | 2024 TN and their run game that made a difference in this matchup.
Early on, it was a defensive affair between both teams as neither offense could gain any positive mojo until we reached the 2nd quarter where the Bruins offensive line started to take over.
Using Dorris as their bell cow back, the Bruins leaned on the senior runner to churn out yards and pick up 1st downs. While the run game led the offensive attack, it was quarterback Baylor Hayes Baylor Hayes 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Brentwood | 2024 State TN and his arm that put points on the board in the 2nd quarter.
Using his mobility to find open space, Hayes rolled out to the left to find receiver Miller Orem in the back of the end zone to put the Bruins on the board, then later in the 2nd quarter, the Bruins senior passer picked up his 2nd touchdown pass of the 1st half when he found Charlie Mullis from five yards out to push Brentwood on top, 14-0.
That would be the score headed into the locker room and basically remain that way until the final whistle. Coming out of halftime, Ravenwood was needing to find answers on offense to find some points but much of the 1st half struggles stayed the same as the Raptors could move the ball but would stall when getting into Brentwood territory.
The third period was the same story as the 1st quarter where both teams moved the ball but didn’t put points on the board, which gave Ravenwood some hope as they were still in the ball game with a chance at victory but the Bruins defense was too good.
Nothing the Raptors offense could do seemed to work. Sophomore quarterback Femi Babalola Femi Babalola 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Ravenwood | 2026 State TN was able to complete some passes to junior wideouts Ben Hubbard Ben Hubbard 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Ravenwood | 2025 State TN and Max Kimpel Max Kimpel 6'2" | 180 lbs | WR Ravenwood | 2025 State TN throughout the game but never could find consistency. The run game was non-existent as well. Senior back Carter Pace Carter Pace 5'7" | 175 lbs | RB Ravenwood | 2024 TN had some solid runs but overall, the Raptors rushing attack was missing in action.
A big reason for the lack of a run game from Ravenwood was due to the Bruins defense, who was exceptional up front, led by seniors Maddox McKim Maddox McKim 6'4" | 210 lbs | LB Brentwood | 2024 State TN , Will Adcock Will Adcock 6'1" | 190 lbs | LB Brentwood | 2024 State TN , Seth Adams Seth Adams 6'3" | 245 lbs | DL Brentwood | 2024 TN and nose tackle Ruger Humble. The Brentwood defense has been stellar all year and they didn’t miss a beat in this cross-town rival as they completely shut down a Raptors offense that have some explosive pieces.
After senior kicker Issac Hayes Issac Hayes 6'3" | 185 lbs | K Brentwood Acad. | 2024 TN pushed through a field goal to push the Bruins ahead 17-0, it was all but sealed up for Brentwood but their defense had to make a few more stops before claiming the region title.
The final few minutes of the game was a filler for the inevitable as Ravenwood continued to run their offense but would watch the seconds tick away towards the eventual loss. Brentwood took control early and never relinquished the lead as they went on to defeat the Raptors and earn a #1 seed in the coming playoffs.
This was an outstanding regular season for Brentwood as they ended undefeated at 10-0 but I’m sure head coach Clint Finch and his Bruins team have their eyes geared towards bigger aspirations and that’s a Class 6A state title, where they have a great shot at making it to Chattanooga.
Player of the Game
The overall numbers/stats for Hayes may not be large in this victory over Ravenwood but his command of the offense along with several key touchdown passes earned him top honors for this matchup. The Bruins senior passer looked like a D1 level quarterback in this game with his feel for what his offense was doing and making the plays when needed. Hayes may be a tad undersized with his height/weight but the dude can sling it and he is quite confident in his skill set. His command of not just the offense but his team along with his play has him in line to play D1 ball and this contest proved that to me.
Highlights
Other Top Performers
(RB) Trey Dorris Trey Dorris 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Brentwood | 2024 TN – Brentwood: While Dorris didn’t score on the night, his rushing was a major factor behind the Bruins win and a force the Raptors couldn’t slow down as his play in the 1st half set the tone for the rest of the game.
‘25 (WR) Ben Hubbard Ben Hubbard 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Ravenwood | 2025 State TN – Ravenwood: Hubbard was the biggest bright spot for a Raptors offense that was held scoreless. The junior wideout produced more than five receptions on the night as well as over 100 yards of total offense.
(LB) Will Adcock Will Adcock 6'1" | 190 lbs | LB Brentwood | 2024 State TN – Brentwood: A key piece against the Raptors run game, Adcock flashed early and often, becoming a force vs. the Ravenwood offense that became unblockable at times.
‘25 (DB) Donovan Starr Donovan Starr 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Ravenwood | 2025 State TN – Ravenwood: Coming off a hot week where Starr landed two Power Five offers, the junior defensive back made several good plays on the outside against a good Bruins receiving corps, showing why college coaches are interested in his upside as a cover corner.
(DE/LB) Maddox McKim Maddox McKim 6'4" | 210 lbs | LB Brentwood | 2024 State TN – Brentwood: The Bruins top edge rusher had a strong 1st half where he sacked Babalola on a key down while also doing a good job of stacking blockers and forcing the run back to the inside.
‘26 (LB) Matt Anderson – Ravenwood: A new name to myself, Anderson had a solid showing on Friday evening where the sophomore linebacker made several physical hits along with flashing excellent work against the Bruins rushing attack.
