Bradlee Anderson
Bradlee Anderson
Hilton Head Christian Academy’s relentless defense was the difference on Friday night against Beaufort Academy, and Bradlee Anderson came up huge to lead the way. Anderson’s nonstop hustle all night held down a strong Beaufort Academy attack, making eight total tackles and adding a timely interception in the first half. He’s incredibly quick off the snap and loves to put pressure on the opposing quarterback. A high-IQ player that’s started to figure it out, Anderson is one of several Eagles that have taken the next step for a team that’s looking like a top contender in Class 3A.
Dylan Clark
Dylan Clark
After a slow start, senior quarterback Dylan Clark is finding it again under center for Hilton Head Christian. He dazzled under the lights at home, completing 14-of-26 passes for 216 yards with four touchdowns and one interceptions. Clark played a hand in all five scores on the night, adding a rushing touchdown to open the game while totaling 80 yards on 17 carries. He’s an aggressive quarterback who likes to test the defenses with deep balls throughout, but can also do damage with his quick instincts as a runner. He brings a multidimensional attack on each play and will be tough to hold down with the emergence of receivers AJ Houpt and Tyshon Mansell.
Mikell Tucker Mathis
Mikell Tucker Mathis
A multitalented contributor for the Patrick Henry Patriots, Mikell Tucker Mathis has become one of the most complete players in all of SCISA 1A. Mathis put up another impressive line against Clarendon Hall on Friday, rushing for 80 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown alongside three important tackles on defense and a pass breakup. He’s a knowledgeable player who can fill in wherever he is needed to make something happen, even at the quarterback position. Expect Mathis to make the hustle plays that the Patriots need to put them over the top as they eye a state title this November.
The strong season continued on Friday for dynamic Cardinal Newman running back Cortez Lane. With his excellent vision and quick legs, Lane burst past Ben Lippen’s defense early and often for 175 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. His speed and decisiveness allow him to promptly find running lanes and use his breakaway speed to escape tacklers and find open grass. Lane should be the primary spark of an efficient Cardinal Newman offense going forward and will be tough to stop next Friday against John Paul II.
It was a terrific night for Cardinal Newman’s defense with a shutout of Ben Lippen on Friday, and David Rodgers led the way in an excellent showing at linebacker. Rodgers was busy all game long, making 7.5 total stops with three of them behind the line of scrimmage. He slowed down the Falcons’ rushing attack with his outstanding motor and pursuit while showing his prowess in quickly wrapping up tackles. He’s a reliable playmaker in the heart of a defense that is clicking so far in SCISA 4A.
Highlights
Tristan Heckman
Tristan Heckman
A standout on both ends for Pee Dee Academy to help the Eagles pick up a massive win against Hilton Head Prep, sophomore Tristan Heckman delivered his best performance yet on Friday. Heckman answered the challenge when his number was called, recording 73 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries. His hard-nosed running and fantastic hustle were the difference to finish off some key drives in the red zone. He also brought it defensively, making five tackles with the same level of intensity. He’s growing into a large role for the defending SCISA 3A state champs as they look to make a surge in the back half of the year.
Hampton Davis
Hampton Davis
We saw a special performance out of SCISA 2A this week thanks to the marvelous two-way play of Greenwood Christian junior Hampton Davis. He cashed in several scoring drives on offense with his strength at running back, breaking tackles and motoring to the end zone for 96 yards and four touchdowns on 13 attempts. And he was even better on the defensive side, leading his team in tackles with 9.5 stops and two for loss. A clutch performer with outstanding stamina to make countless impacts in both ways, Davis is proving his worth in multiple ways for a Greenwood Christian team on the rise in Class 2A.
