After building a 21-0 third quarter lead, Alamogordo held off rejuvenated Capital the rest of the way for a hard-fought 21-14 victory at Jaguar Field. The Tigers improved to 3-1 and travel to El Paso (TX) Riverside next Friday night.
Capital, which lost its third straight game by eight points or less, goes to Albuquerque Academy on Sat., Sept. 16.
Alamogordo outgained Capital, 187-30, in the first half and took an 18-0 lead into intermission. They scored first on Elijah Montoya Elijah Montoya 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Alamogordo | 2024 State NM ‘s 9-yard TD pass to Jason Warren with 4:45 left in the first quarter. After a well-executed Alamogordo punt was downed at the 1-yard line, a Capital fumble in the end zone resulted in a safety for the Tigers on the first snap of the second quarter.
Alamogordo increased the lead to 15-0 when Devin Beres scored on a 9-yard TD run with 5:15 left in the second quarter. Tigers placekicker Aidan Vazquez booted a 31-yard field goal in the final seconds of the second quarter for an 18-0 halftime lead for Alamogordo.
Vazquez booted another field goal from 30 yards out with 7:49 left in the third quarter to give Alamogordo a 21-0 lead and it appeared the Tigers would cruise to their third victory of the season.
Capital, though, decided it wouldn’t go down without a fight.
The Jaguars scored 14 points in a 42-second span late in the third quarter on a pair of TD passes by quarterback Deavan Montano. The second touchdown occurred so quickly after the first because Alamogordo fumbled on the ensuing kickoff return and the Jaguars recovered at the 19.
However, Capital got no closer after making it a one-score game. Alamogordo took precious time off the clock after converting a third-and-25 from its own 8-yard line. The Capital defense, though, eventually halted the drive with an interception in the end zone.
The Alamogordo defense stopped Capital’s ensuing drive at midfield and the Jaguars elected to punt. The Tigers got the ball back with 5:12 left in the fourth quarter and smartly stuck to the ground, rushing for nearly 60 yards in a clock-killing drive.
Several other games were played Thursday night. West Mesa outlasted Albuquerque High, 43-35, in shootout at Community Stadium, Bernalillo rallied past Highland in a defensive battle, 18-14, at Milne Stadium, Atrisco Heritage routed Manzano, 54-17, at Wilson Stadium, Socorro defeated Hope Christian, 29-21, at home and Pojoaque Valley mercy ruled Santa Fe Indian School, 55-0.
