Depending on the team's perspective, football has officially entered a new season in the Midlands.

Most teams will now play region games to complete the regular season. It's now time to see which teams took advantage of the preseason and non-region schedule to contend for the second most important portion of a football schedule.

Here's a list of Midlands players to watch in Week 6:

[player_tooltip player_id='1012653' first='Jaylen' last='Jay'] RB, Gilbert – The junior had his breakout game last week against Saluda. He rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 143 yards and two scores. His versatility will be a challenge for Lower Richland to slow down.

Zayvion Sumpter LB, Lower Richland – With the Diamond-Hornets' struggles on offense (averaging 4.5 points the past four games), they will look to rely upon their defense to pressure Gilbert quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='782263' first='Drake' last='Braddock'] into mistakes. The team's sack leader will need to play a role.

[player_tooltip player_id='1020770' first='Brogan' last='Sox'], [player_tooltip player_id='771224' first='Will' last='Young'] and My‘Son Jones QBs, Brookland-Cayce – Coach Rusty Charpia plans to utilize all three players in games, although not necessarily at quarterback. Of the three, Young is the most versatile as he also sees action at cornerback and one of the team's leading rushers.

[player_tooltip player_id='1267234' first='Kenton' last='Caldwell'] QB, Newberry – The backup was inserted into the lineup and guided the Bulldogs to their first win of the season. The dual threat quarterback provides a playmaker in his team's offense and will have a chance to build some momentum against Eau Claire.

Kristian Golden WR, Fairfield Central – The Lugoff-Elgin transfer has quickly established a rapport with quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='473002' first='Cameron' last='McMillon']. He leads the team with three touchdowns and faces a Mid-Carolina team which has struggled defending the pass.

Noah Kelson RB, A.C. Flora – The senior has helped fill the void of all-state running back Markel Townsend. He's on pace to rush for over 1,000 yards and enters Friday's game against Westwood still seeking his first rushing touchdown.

[player_tooltip player_id='473010' first='Michael' last='Boulware'] LB, Gray Collegiate – It has not taken the sophomore (pictured) long to establish himself as one of the War Eagles' top tacklers. His overall strength and speed getting to the football enhances the War Eagles' defensive front. He'll receive a test from Portal (Ga.).

[player_tooltip player_id='1012863' first='Jeremie' last='Richardson'] WR, Crestwood – The junior is averaging four receptions, 103 receiving yards and a touchdown per game. Coming off a bye, Richardson should get targeted quite frequently by Shrine Bowl quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='589009' first='Javion' last='Martin'] at Lake City.

[player_tooltip player_id='997237' first='Pate' last='Merchant'] QB, Sumter – Socastee has allowed an average of 33 points a contest during its four-game losing streak. It faces a Gamecocks' team which is averaging just over 32 points per game and its senior quarterback has completed 70 percent of his passes this season.
