The Cavaliers scored in all three phases in a 61-27 victory that asserted their dominance not only as a Class 2A contender, but as one of the top teams in any classification with their rout of the Class 5A Gators.
Here were eight of the top standouts for the teams’ Week 1 matchup.
Hutch Grace Hutch Grace 6'1" | 215 lbs | DB Calvary Baptist | 2024 State LA | 6-1, 215 LB/DB | Calvary Baptist (2024)
The safety/linebacker has been a standout playmaker for the Cavaliers since an eight-interception sophomore season and is off to a strong start to his senior season playing around the box and in the slot. Grace racked up 10 tackles, including a sack, and scooped up a blocked punt and returned it up the sideline for a touchdown.
Aubrey Hermes Aubrey Hermes 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Calvary Baptist | 2024 State LA | 6-2, 175 WR | Calvary Baptist (2024)
The big senior receiver caught seven passes for 153 yards and four touchdowns, plus a two-point conversion to lead the Cavaliers’ deep cast of offensive weapons. Hermes was the go-to target in or near the red zone where he consistently got himself open and used his body well to create more space in tight coverage for the bulk of his production, but also got loose for a longer catch-and-run score.
Braylun Huglon Braylun Huglon 5'10" | 175 lbs | DB Calvary Baptist | 2027 State LA | 5-10, 160 DB/ATH | Calvary Baptist (2027)
The Cavaliers’ defense shook off a big score on Captain Shreve’s first play from scrimmage to play dominantly the bulk of the night. The freshman held his own in a veteran secondary and provided one of the bigger highlights with a leaping third-quarter interception, the first of the young career for the promising young prospect.
Cole Miller Cole Miller 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB Calvary Baptist | 2025 State LA | 6-2, 200 LB | Calvary Baptist (2025)
The junior linebacker had another of the Cavaliers’ big-play takeaways to highlight his five-tackle night. Miller did a great job all spring and summer on the 7-on-7 circuits playing the middle of the field and anticipating and disrupting passing lanes. On Thursday, he broke on a ball, snatched the interception just before the receiver could and kept in stride dashing to the end zone.
Jamarlon Otis Jamarlon Otis 5'7" | 175 lbs | RB Captain Shreve | 2025 State LA | 5-7, 175 RB | Captain Shreve (2025)
The highly anticipated matchup quickly became a long, frustrating experience for the Gators trying to slow down or keep up with the Cavaliers’ explosive performance. But the shifty junior running back was a notable highlight with his game-opening, 75-yard touchdown scamper highlighting a 18-carry, 142-yard and two-score evening.
James Simon James Simon 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Calvary Baptist | 2025 State LA | 6-0, 200 RB | Calvary Baptist (2025)
The highly ranked junior running back provided the balance to the Cavaliers’ offense with his 11 rushes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Simon is a big, strong back who runs physically through contact, but also showed his impressive explosiveness and shiftiness in space at his size on his breakaway scores.
Landon Sylvie Landon Sylvie 5'10" | 150 lbs | DB Calvary Baptist | 2024 State LA | 5-10, 150 DB | Calvary Baptist (2024)
The senior safety flew around like a missile to rack up a team-high nine solo tackles — including some particularly hard-hitting stops — and assists on another four and broke through to block the first-quarter punt that Grace managed to corral and return to the end zone.
Abram Wardell Abram Wardell 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Calvary Baptist | 2025 State LA | 5-11, 190 QB | Calvary Baptist (2025)
The junior quarterback played his typically poised, efficient and productive game in the high-profile matchup against a Class 5A opponent. Wardell completed 20 of his 27 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball around to at least five different receivers and calmly handling occasional snap issues or Gators pressure and making good decisions not only where to throw the ball, but when to stand in the pocket, to roll out and buy time or to take off to make a play or two with his legs.
