Week 6 is here and no matter how you slice it, every game means just about everything.
With district and regional spots up for grabs, you will now see the best of the best stepping up and showing why they belong.
Each week, we bring you 10 games that more than peg the meter and give you some insight on teams that many never get the chance to watch up close.
Each contest will determine slotting for the state playoffs that start in the next five weeks as Tallahassee is now a destination that 18 teams are looking to reach.
While we are not into making predictions, we finished 8-2 last week – and have the momentum moving into this week.
Here are 10 games to keep an eye on this evening:
No. 20 Apopka (4M, 3-1) at No. 19 Sanford Seminole (4M, 4-1). After losing for the first time this year to Orlando Edgewater last week, the defending 4A runner up Blue Darters venture into Seminole County to play a program that is starting to come together with a first year head coach. Great talent on both sides of the ball. Apopka needs to step up the offense and not put so much strain on its quality defense.
THE PICK: Seminole 21, Apopka 13
DeLand (4S, 3-1) at Port Orange Spruce Creek (4S, 4-1). Coming off a convincing loss to Lake Mary last week, the Hawks are at home again, looking to get back on the winning track against a team that has won three straight after losing to Daytona Beach Mainland on opening night. This looms as a key district game.
THE PICK: DeLand 31, Spruce Creek 27
Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2M, 4-1) and No. 13 Plantation American Heritage (2M, 2-1). It’s the same old story for these two teams. They usually play twice each season – with the regular season matchup setting the tone in the district and a race for a state playoff spot. While the Chiefs are still a very good team, the Patriots, despite losing several key players from last season’s 2M state runner up team but have started to rebuild and have plenty of confidence. This has always been competitive, but the Patriots have held the edge.
THE PICK: American Heritage 28, Cardinal Gibbons 20.
Fort Meade (2S, 4-0) at Largo Indian Rocks Christian (1M, 4-0). One of the many battles between undefeated programs this week as the Miners are on the road against a team that has been averaging over 40 points this season – with win against some larger schools. Fort Meade has also taken on some larger schools and has come out on top.
THE PICK: Fort Meade 28, Indian Rocks Christian 22
No. 1 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1M, 5-0) at Coconut Creek (3M, 4-1). With numerous regular season wins under their belt, and plenty of state titles, the national powerhouse is back on the road after a major national win against Miami Central, playing a Cougar team has certainly been the talk of Broward County this season. They have soundly beaten Plantation and Blanche Ely, and not including the forfeit against Boyd Anderson, their opponent’s combined record is 13-4!
THE PICK: Chaminade-Madonna 34, Coconut Creek 14
No. 24 Jacksonville Mandarin (4M, 4-1) at No. 18 Lake Mary (4M, 4-0). Ever since the middle of the summer, when they looked impressive at every camp and 7-on-7 event they took part in, the Mustangs have been one of the favorites to make a major run at the 4M state title. After losing last week, they are now being challenged, and this week’s game will tell a lot as they walk into one of the best teams in Florida – even though they have flown way beneath the radar. The Rams have one of the most complete teams they have put together, and that could mean danger for their visitors from Duval County.
THE PICK: Lake Mary 30, Mandarin 17
Orange City University (4A, 5-0) at New Smyrna Beach (3S, 4-0). Because there are very few people across Florida do not follow every program, many will miss this contest and that would be a shame. The Barracudas are at home and look to go 5-0 for the first time in nearly two decades – while University is playing the first of three games that could easily dictate their season. This is indeed a crucial district contest.
THE PICK: University 27, New Smyrna Beach 21
No. 25 Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast (4S, 4-1) at No. 7 Cocoa (2S, 3-1). Besides Chaminade-Madonna, these two programs have easily played the most challenging schedule and have won a combined seven of nine games. The Tigers were seconds away from pulling the biggest upset of the season at St. Thomas Aquinas – while the Titans were soundly beaten in Fort Lauderdale last week.
THE PICK: Cocoa 35, Treasure Coast 17
Tampa Carrollwood Day (1M, 3-0) at No. 17 Clearwater Central Catholic (1M, 5-0). Here is a game that is very interesting – with the state 1M runner up Marauders at home and playing amazing football with talent, depth, and tremendous coaching. On the other side of field is a team that the experts believe has more Power 5 talent than just about anyone, and that is a huge reason they are unbeaten and expected to make this a quality game this evening.
THE PICK: Clearwater Central Catholic 34, Carrollwood Day 21
Wesley Chapel Wiregrass Ranch (4S, 3-1) at Spring Hill Springstead (4S, 3-1). Since losing the season opener against Eau Gallie, the Eagles have been flying high as they head toward this big district matchup at home. The surprising Bulls have scored 176 points this season and are averaging over 50 points an outing. This is a key District 6 game.
THE PICK: Wesley Chapel 34, Springstead 28
