Not to mention many D2 schools are in action Thursday night as I write this. As we close in on the kickoff of college football let’s take a bit of time to reminisce on previous Classes. To do that, let’s go through the archived rankings here in IL and see what some of Illinois’ best HS players are up to.
The #1 athlete in the Class of 2021 coming out of Marist HS committed to play for Notre Dame coming out of HS. This past weekend, during Week 0 of the college football season, Pat made his first start for the Fighting Irish. He was apart of an OL unit that ran over the Navy defense, and should be one of the best OL groups in the country. Notre Dame will need the OL to be it’s strength, and Coogan should have a big impact on that.

The best skill position player in the Class of 2021 has continued to standout at the college level. During his time at Missouri we have seen him really push his game, and impact to the next level. As a freshman at Missouri, Dominic put up 26-173-0. He came back as a starter for his sophomore season and put together a strong season with 56-846-3. Following that strong season Lovett entered the transfer portal, and now will play for the defending National Champions, the Georgia Bulldogs. It will be very exciting to see the role he carves out on the offense.

The Hillcrest standout has continued to dominate on the ground at the college level. Irving spent his freshman year at Minnesota where he rushed for 133-699-4 TDs. Following that season, Irving made the decision to transfer to Oregon where we saw him take that next step you look for in a star RB. He finished his sophomore season with an impressive stat line of 156-1,058-5 TDs and adding 31 receptions for 299 yards, and 3 TDs. As a junior, look for him to continue to expand on those numbers as he proves to be a versatile threat in the backfield.

Our #1 player in the Class wasted no time getting on campus at Missouri and finding a way to get on the field and make an impact. As a freshman, Luther played in every game and started 10 of them. He finished with 45-375-5 TDs plus scored 2 TDs on the ground and returned a punt for 6. He scored the most offensive TDs of any freshman in the FBS last year. Big things are ahead for the former Illinois prep star!
It looks like Toriano has a bright future at Clemson. That is so exciting to hear because Clemson has produced some elite level DBs that not only shined at the collegiate level, but also the pros. As a freshman, Toriano made a name for himself playing in 14 games, and making 2 starts. He finished with 23 tackles, 1 TFL, 4 PBUs, 1 sack, 1 INT, and 1 safety. Pride enters his sophomore season on the 2 Deep Depth Chart at CB2 behind Sheridan Jones.
Keontez found his way onto the field as a sophomore for the Wisconsin Badgers. In the run heavy offense, Lewis was still able to carve out a solid year with 20 receptions, 313 yards, and 3 TDs. Lewis must have had a great offseason with the new coaching staff in Madison as he enters Week One on the second team of the two deep depth chart behind starter Chimere Dike. Expectations are that we will see a lot of receivers used this fall in the new Badgers offense, so get ready for plenty of Keontez on the field.
