The openers included big performances across the CSRA, and a bunch of offensive weapons we’ve known about for some time continued to do their thing. Among them, there was also a new name that after missing each of the last two seasons on the football field roared into a position of prominence.
Editor’s Note: To nominate your players a Game Ball, please send a member of the Prep Red Zone South Carolina team your players’ performance data by noon Saturday following Friday games.
Joenathan Peeples Joenathan Peeples 5'9" | 205 lbs | RB Silver Bluff | 2024 State SC RB, Silver Bluff
Peeples had a great start in his new programs after his transfer from Midland Valley. Against South Aiken in a game full of dangerous ball carriers, Peeples had a game-high 130 yards and a score. The total inched him closer to 1,700 career rushing yards and he now has 17 career rushing touchdowns after seeing significant playing time, mostly as a starter, the last two seasons at his previous school.
Traevon Dunbar Traevon Dunbar 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Midland Valley | 2024 State SC RB, Midland Valley
Welcome back, Traevon Dunbar Traevon Dunbar 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Midland Valley | 2024 State SC . While we saw Dunbar pump out a couple of 170-yard games during the back half of 2022 following his return from a knee injury, Friday’s 35-21 win over Grovetown, Ga., was a return to the all-state standout we saw during Dunbar’s sophomore season at Silver Bluff. Dunbar used his 26 carries en route to 267 yards and two touchdowns against a team that decimated Midland Valley this time last year.
Cameron Austin Cameron Austin 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB Barnwell | 2025 State SC QB, Barnwell
Austin helped usher in the Brian Smith era at Barnwell in style. The junior quarterback completed 10-of-15 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-0 victory over Williston-Elko. He also rushed for two scores. Austin, who started last year, accounted for 15 total touchdowns last year as a sophomore.
Malik Scurry WR, South Aiken
Silver Bluff did its best to limit the Thoroughbreds’ top-notch rushing attack, and quarterback Terrence Smith Terrence Smith 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB South Aiken | 2024 State SC adjusted well by transitioning from run-first signal-caller to passer. Of his 294 passing yards, 117 of them went to Scurry, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior who hasn’t played football in either of the past two seasons. Scurry gives South Aiken another offensive threat.
Mickenzie Atterberry Mickenzie Atterberry 6'1" | 160 lbs | QB Silver Bluff | 2024 State SC QB, Silver Bluff
Like Peeples, Atterberry’s first game in a Silver Bluff uniform was commendable. After throwing for 1,109 yards and rushing for another 131 last year at Aiken, Atterberry put himself on an early pace to eclipse both figures by running for 94 and throwing for 170 (according to the Aiken Standard) in the win over South Aiken.
Chanston Crosby Chanston Crosby 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Bamberg-Ehrhardt | 2025 State SC QB, Bamberg-Ehrhardt
A defending Class A All-State selection, Crosby (pictured) got the job done in a lopsided victory over Edisto. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound quarterback was an efficient 14-of-19 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Crosby showed off his big arm by squeezing passing into tight windows and making a couple of off-balance throws most quarterbacks can’t.
Tamari Daniels Tamari Daniels 5'8" | 145 lbs | WR Blackville-Hilda | 2024 State SC WR, Blackville-Hilda
One of the fastest players in the state had a great start to his senior season by posting five receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the 51-6 win over Calhoun Falls Charter. As you can see in the video, any way Blackville-Hilda can get the ball in his hands in space, they’ll try. And Daniels serves as a spark plug more often than not, whether it’s returning punts or catching short screens or burning someone deep.
